Cactus Juice Chronic Inflammation and Pain Relief

Original Article @ David Ogdens Blog

How do you feel pain

When you cut yourself, the pain stimulates specific pain receptors, and this stimulus is transferred via specialised nerves to the spinal cord and the brain. The pain stimulus is processed in the brain, which then sends an impulse down the spinal cord, via nerves which command the body to react. An example of this would be if you withdraw your hand from a very hot object.

Pain receptors are present everywhere in the body, especially the skin, surfaces of the joints, the lining around the bone, walls of the arteries, and certain structures in the skull. The brain itself does not have any pain receptors at all. Extreme pressure, heat or cold, or substances released upon trauma or inflammation, can all stimulate pain receptors.

Fast pain or Slow Pain

A pain stimulus – if you cut yourself – consists of two sensations. The first one is the so-called fast pain sensation, and is experienced as sharp. After a few seconds, this goes over into the sensation of slow pain, which is more a dull and burning pain and can last for days, weeks, or even months.

Fast pain makes the body withdraw immediately from the pain stimulus, in order to avoid further damage. Even strong painkillers may not overcome this pain. This is why you need a local or general anaesthetic during surgery.

The response of the body to slow pain is to hold the affected body part immobile, so that healing can take place. The impulse from slow pain is distributed to many areas in the brain, leading to a whole range of symptoms such as suffering, difficulty in sleeping, because the pain stimulates the wake centre and a depressed mood.

When a surgeon cuts a bowel, this is not painful at all. But for the surgeon to get to the bowel, he has to cut through skin, and that is why you need anaesthetic. However, massive injury to an internal organ like the gall bladder, the uterus or heart can be severely painful. This pain often radiates or is referred to other parts of the body. Opioids prescribed by a doctor are very effective in treating this type of pain, while local anaesthetics also easily take this type of pain away.

What can the body do to temper the pain sensation?

Your body reacts to pain in three ways:

  1. When you get hurt, you instinctively rub the painful area, which partly relieves the pain. Rubbing or pressing stimulates certain other nerve fibres, whose input in the spinal cord get preference to the input from the pain nerve fibres. So rubbing or pressing can actually block the pain sensation.
  2. When a pain stimulus reaches the brain, the brain puts a brake on the pain impulse as it enters the spinal cord.
  3. In the pain-processing parts of the brain there is a system of natural opioids as endorphins, which are released when a pain impulse reaches the brain. They block transmission and perception of pain. Exercise increases the levels of endorphins.

Measuring Inflammation

Original Article @ David Ogdens Blog

Nopalea Cactus Juice
Measuring inflammation

One of the best inflammation indicators we have is a protein in the blood that acts as a proxy for inflammation, called C-reactive protein (or CRP). Levels of CRP rise and fall in response to inflammation, so knowing your CRP measurement tells you a lot about what's going on in your body. The American Heart Association and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have designated a CRP concentration of below 1.0 mg/L as low risk for heart problems; between 1.0 to 3.0 mg/L as average risk for heart problems; above 3.0 mg/L as high risk for heart problems. Very high levels of CRP (more than 10 mg/L) can also indicate an impaired immune response or inflammatory disease.

Since CRP is a protein found in your blood, the only way you can get information about your levels is to have a blood sample analysed through a service like InsideTracker. CRP is measured in the Performance Panel, along with testosterone, white blood cell count, potassium, sodium, zinc and chromium (in addition to the thirteen other biomarkers).

Inflammation and athletes
Athletes should be particularly concerned with monitoring their levels of CRP since performance is so closely tied to their cardiovascular fitness. Good news for athletes: consistent and moderate aerobic exercise is one of the best ways to lower inflammation. Regular exercise has actually been shown to reduce inflammation by 20-60% and to reduce white blood cell count (another marker for inflammation) during and after exercise. That's why athletes, especially swimmers, have some of the lowest levels of CRP around.

Interestingly enough, inconsistent exercise can actually have the opposite effect on inflammation. For all you weekend warriors out there, keep in mind that engaging in intense, but inconsistent exercise can increase your white blood cell levels, increase inflammation and weaken your immune system. Research has shown that prolonged strenuous exercise (i.e. running a marathon) can actually triple white blood cell levels! And athletes who over-train or over-exert themselves during competitions can weaken their immune systems, making it more difficult to recover properly.

Controlling CRP through diet
What you eat also has an effect on inflammation. To keep your levels in check, avoid eating foods that are high in fat, calories, sugar, and salt (such as fast foods). Aim for foods that are high in antioxidants like vitamins C and E, fiber, calcium, fish oils, mono-unsaturated fats, and low on the glycemic index. Specific foods that have been shown to have an effect on lowering inflammation include garlic, grapes, herbs and spices, soy protein, nuts, olive oil, black and green teas, and vinegar. (Many of these foods are consistent with following a Mediterranean Diet, a good way to keep your CRP levels in the healthy range.) Aim to eat at least six servings of fruits and vegetables per day, which will benefit much more than your CRP levels. Discover new types of fruits and vegetables to work into your daily repertoire using InsideTracker's Food Menu tool.

Rosacea inflammation

Original Article @ David Ogdens Blog

Nopalea Cactus Juice
Inflammation and Rosacea

Rosacea is a chronic disorder causing "flare-ups" of inflammation to the skin. Nearly 16 million people suffer from Rosacea, primarily those of Scandinavian, Irish, or British decent. Commonly described as "blushing" or "a flushed look to the skin", Rosacea's most common physical characteristics are redness on the cheeks, nose, chin and/or forehead, visible blood vessels, and sometimes little bumps. Around 40% of people who have Rosacea also have relatives with it, so it is considered hereditary. Other symptoms include burning, stinging, or swelling to the skin, eye irritation, and skin that is extremely dry.

Proven statistics of Rosacea have to do with an inflammatory response to common skin bacteria or harmless skin mites called Demodex (these live on everyone's skin, disgusting I know). Sun exposure, emotional stress, extreme weather (hot/cold), wind, humidity, vigorous exercise, alcohol, and spicy foods are all known triggers when it comes to Rosacea flare-ups. Certain skincare products and cosmetics can also cause them. Rosacea prone skin is easily irritated so, like Psoriasis or Eczema, it's best to stick with products free of fragrance and dyes. Witch Hazel, alcohol, Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Clove, Salicylic Acid, harsh scrubs, and chemical SPFs may also be trigger causing factors so always be aware of the ingredients in what you're using.

There is no cure for Rosacea, but there are affective treatments available. Medications, both oral and topical, have been proven to reduce inflammation and kill bacteria. Laser treatments that remove visible blood vessels have also become quite popular in recent years.

The most import thing is to have the proper skin care regimen. You want to use very gentle products made for your skin type. If a product doesn't say it's specifically for Rosacea, words like sensitive, stressed, or calming on the label means it will help. Also, look for ingredients such as Arnica, Chamomile, and Lavender.

Inflammation and Weight Loss

Original Article @ David Ogdens Blog

Inflammation and Weight Loss

If you think it's no big deal when your hands swell or your rings don't fit a couple of hours after you eat – think again! That bloated feeling probably means you ate something that gave you inflammation. Don't just pass it off as thinking you ate too much. If you want to feel better, you need to figure out what it is that made you feel that way so you'll know what to avoid.

Inflammation can have a serious impact on your health. Chronic inflammation can speed up the aging process, because it floods the tissues with free radicals and promotes the destruction of normal cells.

So what can you do to prevent inflammation? The first thing you need to do is go to the bathroom. After you weigh yourself, try eating something different that might be a problem for you – but only one thing. When you get on the scale the next day, you'll know you have inflammation if your weight jumped up. And since you only added one new food, you'll also know which food caused the inflammation.

You may be surprised at some of the foods that most people think are healthy but are actually reactive for a lot of people. Greek yogurt is a great example. Greek yogurt is 85 percent reactive, which means most people shouldn't eat it. Some other highly reactive foods include cottage cheese, asparagus, tomatoes and turkey.

On the other side, there are foods that can help reduce inflammation, like lemon juice in water or on salad to help cleanse the liver. It's also important to drink plenty of water.

Inflammation, Eczema and Psoriasis

Original Article @ David Ogdens Blog

Nopalea Cactus Juice
Eczema and Psoriasis

Eczema and Psoriasis have a lot of similar characteristics. Both are described as skin inflammation "flare ups" caused by allergic reactions, emotional stress, or trauma to the skin. Both are hereditary. However the way they look and where the flare ups occur is where these two skin conditions differ. Now I will go a little more into each condition and possible treatments.

Eczema is caused by a defect in the skin's barrier function, possibly combined with an abnormal function of the immune system. Flare ups can be triggered from soaps, cosmetics, synthetic clothing, detergents, jewellery or sweat. Atopic Dermatitis is another word for Eczema.

Physical characteristics include dry, reddened skin that itches and/or burns, scaly, thick or crusty patches of skin, and sometimes blisters occurring on the hands, feet, inner arms, and the backs of the knees.

Psoriasis is the result of rapid proliferation of skin cells that is triggered by abnormal lymphocytes from the blood. The result produces dry, thickened skin. Weakened immune systems can play a factor in a Psoriasis flare up, as well as emotional stress, infections, reactions to a particular drug, or skin trauma.

Physical characteristics can go from mild (faint, dry patches) to severe (thick red scales). It can also look like small, flattened bumps and mostly occurs on the hands, feet, elbows, and knees.

Neither Psoriasis or Eczema have a cure, but there are ways to treat symptoms. Both can be helped with ointments such as hydrocortisone or steroid creams as well as topical medications prescribed by a physician. Hydrating with oil based body moisturizers on a regular basis will help either condition . People who suffer from Eczema can benefit from a humidifier. Natural ingredients to look for that are known to help ease the symptoms of Eczema are Aloe Vera, Turmeric, Manuka Honey, Apple Cider Vinegar, Coconut Oil, colloidal Oatmeal, Chamomile, Witch Hazel, and Rosemary. Omega 3 & 6 Oils, Flaxseed Oil, cactus juice,Graperoot Extract, and Milk Thistle can all help Psoriasis. Bath salts and tanning beds can also help.

Cactus Juice Chronic Inflammation and Pain Relief

Original Article @ David Ogdens Blog

Nopalea Cactus Juice
Hay Fever

Spring in the Northern Hemisphere is when nature wakes up and trees start bursting into bursting with buds with singing birds and splashes of colour from spring flowers. The world is waking up and everything is great……

Unless you are one of the 10 million hay fever sufferers in the UK.

Hay fever is an allergy to pollen; which is produced in various forms from early spring till early summer. It causes inflammation and irritation to nasal airways and mucosal membranes. Symptoms include itchy eyes, sneezing, sore throats, congested sinus and a general feeling of being unwell. It can also irritate other conditions such as eczema and asthma.

So what can you do about it?

There is no cure but there is evidence to say it usually reduces in severity, as you get older.

There are many ways you can help relieve the symptoms, some orthodox, some slightly less. Each person needs to find what works for them.

Talking to you pharmacist if you suffer badly is the first step. They may give you antihistamines to help relieve the symptoms. If you suffer very badly you may need to see you doctor and consider steroid injections.

For a more natural approach there are several simple things you can try:

  • Honey – local. It needs to be eaten for at least one month before you usually get your symptoms. The theory is that as it is made from local pollen you gradually accumulate some immunity. And it tastes good. 1-2 teaspoons a day.
  • Wear glasses/sunglasses. Sounds simple but it will keep the pollen out of your eyes, reducing the irritation. It will also stop you being able to rub them easily – which makes it worse.
  • A thin layer of Vaseline inside your nose. The pollen will stick to the Vaseline preventing it getting in to your system, reducing the reaction you have.
  • Breathe through your nose, not your mouth. Your nose is especially designed to filter as much out of the air before it goes into your body. This reduces the pollen getting into your body naturally. If you breathe through your mouth the pollen will go into your throat and cause a reaction.
  • Shower/change your clothes when you get in. The pollen sticks to everything. When you get in change your clothes and have a quick shower. This will reduce your exposure. Reducing your symptoms.
  • Don't dry your clothes outside – the pollen will attach to them.
  • Avoid areas where the pollen count will be high – parks, etc.
  • Exercising outside? – Do it first thing in the morning. The pollen count is lower then as is the pollution level.
  • Diet – ginger is known as a decongestant and may help if your sinuses are bunged up, cumin is known as an anti-inflammatory.
  • Water intake – if you don't drink enough water your mucus remains thick and is harder to get rid of. Also helps flush toxins out.
  • Cucumber over the eyes – thin slices help cool itchy eyes. And it is relaxing.

Pain and Inflammation Relief

Original Article @ David Ogdens Blog

Nopalea Cactus Juice
Pain and Inflammation Relief

Did you know that pain is really a trick played on us by our mind to get us to do something. Let's examine the anatomy of pain to see if we can learn to listen to its message.

Pain fibers
Nerves do many wonderful things, such as empowering our stomach to digest our food, empowering our heart to pump our blood and empowering our eyes to read this page. These are called efferent nerves. Efferent nerves carry signals from your brain to your body.

Nerves that carry signals from your body to your brain are called afferent nerves. Different receptors in afferent nerves help us distinguish hot and cold, a light touch from heavy pressure, and the many faces of pain signals: sharp, dull, throbbing, fixed, migrating, piercing, etc. Even numbness or pins-and-needles sensations are really pain sensations because of their afferent nerve signals.

Pain nerves are covered in a protective sheath called myelin. The myelin sheath may become damaged from injury, toxicity, and certain deficiencies such as Vitamin B-12 and folate. When this occurs, we will feel pain sensations when no injury really exists. This is where the trickery begins.

Interpreting the signals
A pain signal is designed to get you to alert you and help avoid serious injury. If you put your hand on a hot stove, pain signals get you to quickly remove or withdraw your hand before more serious injury occurs. The same with cold, sharp, dull, etc. Pain is very motivating!

Afferent nerves don't really feel pain. You don't really feel pain. Your nerves merely carry a signal from your body to your brain. Your brain, in turn, interprets this signal according to the type of nerve that conveys the message.

When you touch something hot, your brain interprets heat; you don't really feel heat. When you touch something cold, your brain interprets cold; you don't really feel the cold.
When you experience pain you are not really feeling pain; your brain is interpreting a signal as pain. That becomes very important as we discuss the remedies for chronic pain.

Remedies for pain
Pain is the way your body signals that there is something wrong requiring immediate attention – withdraw from the pain! Switches – like light switches that turn on a light – turn on the pain signal when danger exists and turn it off when danger has passed. So, the first remedy for chronic pain is to withdraw from whatever is causing the pain.

With chronic pain, sometimes the switch gets turned on and never gets turned off! These switches, often called pain gates, are ruled by nutrients such as Vitamin D. Also, in chronic nerve pain, a signal is sent from a damaged area or lesion in the myelin sheath. The myelin sheath is ruled by nutrients such as Vitamin B-12 and folate as well as essential fatty acids.

Chronic muscle pain occurs when muscles try to restore balance to an unbalanced muscle region. The imbalance may be caused by injury, stress, a sedentary lifestyle or poor posture (really, poor posture and sedentary living are types of muscle injury). Muscle balance is ruled by magnesium and, to a smaller extent, by potassium and calcium.

The effect of inflammation
Just as chronic nerve pain can become caught in a loop or cycle, inflammation may become chronic even after the cause of the inflammation is removed. The chemicals of inflammation injure your afferent nerves and your brain interprets this injury as chronic pain. Pain and inflammation go hand in hand.

To break the cycle of chronic pain we must:

  1. Remove the cause: trauma/injury, toxins, etc.
  2. Restore nutrient balance
  3. Break the cycle of inflammation
In this way we can learn to listen to the message of pain and achieve the balance of pain-free living!

Back Pain Relief

Original Article @ David Ogdens Blog

Nopalea Cactus Juice
Back Pain

Back pain is one of the most common health conditions in the UK – it is estimated that eight million people in the UK currently suffer with chronic back pain. It can be further exacerbated by sitting down for prolonged periods of time, so working behind a desk or computer all day can become problematic. Often, this also leads to poor posture. In addition to back pain, sedentary lifestyles can increase the risk of developing health problems such as diabetes and obesity. Here are some suggestions to reduce back pain

  • Stretching in you chair
Basic stretching exercises will help relieve tension in the back and increase energy levels. More strenuous exercises probably aren't possible whilst at work, but there are simple stretches that may help to combat back pain.
  • Watch your posture
It is vital to monitor your posture when you spend long periods of the day sitting down, particularly if you suffer from back pain. When seated always keep your back straight and your shoulders back. If you use a computer then the top of the computer monitor should be level with your eyes. Ideally, feet should be kept flat on the floor. You may need to monitor your posture closely at first if you catch yourself slouching, but soon adopting a good posture will become automatic.
  • Move around
If your work requires you to sit at a desk for the duration of the working day make regular attempts to get up and move around. Try to break your eyes away from the computer screen every thirty minutes and focus on something else in the room for at least thirty seconds. This will reduce eye strain and headaches. Also, walk to converse with colleagues rather than email or phone – although I appreciate this is not always possible when you have a busy diary to keep on top of. If you're really motivated you could try and join a gym near your office. Pop in before or after work, or on your lunch break.
  • Changes to your diet
Avoid the vending machines! Chocolates and fizzy drinks provide short bursts of energy that result in a crash soon after eating. Your muscles need a constant supply of energy to function properly so eat foods that offer sustained energy such as complex carbohydrates, whole grains, and pasta. Also try to consume plenty of antioxidant fruits and vegetables and bring your own healthy snacks along to work.
  • Drink plenty of water
Dehydration is a leading cause of tiredness and fatigue, and has also been associated with back pain. Try to drink at least 7 to 8 glasses of fresh water per day. Avoid fizzy and sugary drinks as these will result in an energy 'crash' soon after drinking, increasing tiredness, fatigue, and back pain.
  • Hot and cold therapy
Play around and see which works best for your back pain. Cold therapy is particularly useful in helping reduce inflammation and swelling, whilst heat therapy reduces cramping and muscle spasms. It is easy to keep a hot water bottle on hand if back pain becomes severe whilst at your desk.

Heart Inflammation

Cholesterol has long been seen as the key cause of cardiovascular disease, but 50% of all heart attacks occur in people with normal cholesterol levels, which suggests that other factors are at work.

Researchers at Bostons Bringham and Womens Hospital have identified Cholesterol partner as inflammation.

Inflammation is simply part of your bodies natural defence to foreign invaders such as as bacteria, toxins or virus, However if we chronically expose the body to injury by toxins or foods that the human body was never designed to process, the result is chronic inflammation. chronic inflammation damage can strike all parts of the body including the heart.

In order to keep your heart healthy it is suggested that your diet should include plants that can reduce cellular inflammation, such as healthy herbs and spices like turmeric, ginger, coriander and Garlic. also include vegetables that help break down unwanted fat inside the body, like green onions, leeks and radishes, plus drink a daily does of Nopalea.

Nopalea Cactus Juice
Antioxidant

The term "antioxidant" has become popular in a multitude of products from acai to dark chocolate, but the most important antioxidant is the one made by your body: glutathione. Sufficient glutathione is vital for good health.

Glutathione is a molecule that protects the body in many ways. It shields cells from damage caused by oxidation and inflammation, it aids in detoxification, and it helps the immune system function at its best.

When glutathione production drops, you are more vulnerable to:

  1. autoimmune disease
  2. chemical sensitivities
  3. heavy metal sensitivities
  4. inflammatory disorders
  5. intestinal permeability (leaky gut)
  6. other immune issues

Chronic stress depletes glutathione

When we are healthy, our bodies make enough glutathione to protect us. However, chronic stress, whether it is from toxins, poor diet, sleep deprivation, smoking, excess sugar, or other stressors, eventually exhausts glutathione levels. Glutathione levels also decrease gradually as a result of aging.

To raise glutathione levels inside the cells, where it can protect the cells' energy-producing factories called "mitochondria", you must enhance your body's ability to recycle glutathione. Recycling glutathione means taking glutathione that has already been used to protect the cells, and rebuilding it so it's ready for action again.

Studies show a correlation between the inability to recycle glutathione and increased autoimmune disease. Glutathione recycling helps balance the immune system, protect body tissue from damage caused by inflammation, and also helps repair damage. Good glutathione recycling is an important tool in managing autoimmune disease.

Glutathione recycling also helps protect and repair the gut. It's common for people with autoimmune disease and inflammatory disorders to have leaky gut, which exacerbates their immune condition. Poor glutathione recycling weakens gut integrity, making a person more prone to multiple food sensitivities and chronic gut issues. Good glutathione recycling is a vital part of restoring and protecting gut health.

One of the most important steps to enhance glutathione recycling is to remove stressors depleting glutathione levels. These may include lack of sleep, smoking, food intolerance, diets high in sugars and processed foods, excess alcohol intake, and metabolic imbalances, such as with the hormones or immune system.

Asthma inflammation relief

The airways of asthmatics become highly inflamed. The blood vessels get dilated and engorged with blood and their walls leak fluid and protein into the surrounding mucosa, causing edema and eventually fibrosis. The airways are infiltrated with inflammatory cells, which release various mediators that promote the growth of smooth muscle cells, tissue damage, and bronchial hyper-reactivity. The airways constrict and become congested with necrotized epithelial tissue, dead immune cells, mucous and plasma.

Reducing the inflammation is paramount and the arachidonic acid-derived prostaglandins and leukotrienes are rational targets. Aspirin prevents the production of the pro-inflammatory prostaglandins and nitric oxide, decreasing vasodilation and inappropriate spasms in the airways. Avoiding polyunsaturated fatty acids and replacing them with saturated fatty acids will curtail leukotriene synthesis, histamine release and vascular leakiness.

Stimulants have an important place in the treatment of asthma. The stimulants found in coffee and tea have a relaxant effect on the bronchial smooth muscles and can help to dilate the constricted airways. PDE-4 is an enzyme that is implicated in inflammatory cells and the methylxanthines (caffeine in coffee and theophylline in tea) inhibit this enzyme and is therefore anti-inflammatory. Methylxanthines also stimulate the respiratory centres in the brain (this may be beneficial in asthmatics that exhibit reduced respiration and a tendency to retain carbon dioxide), is protective against allergic reactions and dampens oxidative damage.

Vitamin E is a structural anti-oxidant that prevents oxidation and stabilizes membrane structures. Vitamin D regulates T-cells and antigen-presenting cells that are implicated in the early phase of asthma.

Asthma has many parallels to other inflammatory processes, such as atherosclerosis and inflammatory bowel diseases and can serve as a model for understanding the inflammatory process. Efforts to correct one condition will likely have positive effects on the others.

Chronic Inflammation Tips

Chronic pain and inflammation relief

Psoriasis is linked to systemic inflammation. Inflammation is your body's response to stress from diet, lifestyle and/or environment. It causes many diseases like arthritis and cancer, as well as psoriasis and general aging.

Common treatment of psoriasis includes anti-inflammatory drugs like aspirin and ibuprofen, but these just temporarily ease the symptoms.

We know that our diet is super important to the health of our skin – we are what we eat!

While the affect of certain foods on psoriasis, eczema and acne are well-known; like fried, salty and fatty foods, there are a few foods that are less obvious, but could still be having a big impact on whether you skin is flaring up, or staying calm.

If you struggle with acne, you might want to keep an eye out of the following items in your diet:

Meat fat, mince, sausages, chips, mayonnaise, peanut butter, cheese, cheesecake, chocolate, nougat, fudge, cream, ice cream, protein bars and shakes.

The foods you eat determine the quality of the natural oils your body produces. The fattier the foods you eat, the thicker and sludgier your natural oils become. So, when your skin produces the oil, it's more likely to cause congested pores. If you have psoriasis or eczema, you need to watch out for inflammatory foods, like:

Oranges, orange juice, strawberries, chocolate, chili, hot spices, curries, wasabi, alcohol and coffee.

Different things will always have different affects on different people. Try to pay attention to what you're eating to make sure you're making the right choices for your skin.

Dealing with inflammation

Well let us talk about how your immune system responds to any injury in your body and that is with inflammation. So when cholesterol assaults your artery walls – you guessed it – the immune system responds with inflammation. Now if your choice is to eat carbohydrates that happen to be rich in soluble fiber into your body, then you just may head off the inflammation process by having cleared out some of that cholesterol

Inflammation can be cooled by filling up with two types of fiber, the soluble and the insoluble.

According to a study at the University of Massachusetts Medical School which has been following a group of more than 500 people for a little over a year. They have been measuring this groups blood levels of CRP.

The 500 people have been asked to detail their diets – especially paying attention to their fiber intake. The people who have eaten the most fiber – more than 20 grams a day – have exhibited 63% less inflammation than the people who ate a low fiber diet.

The 20 grams of fiber per day is the minimum recommended healthy amount by most of the experts.

So why should you want to lower your cholesterol you may ask, although. I hope you are aware that there is little question that persistently high blood sugar increases the threat of your heart attacks. Once again we can blame the free radicals – these compounds oxidize cholesterol particles, making them more dangerous to your arteries. Now how do

Eating a diet that contains at least 20 grams of fiber will clean or clear your arteries . That does not seem to be a difficult task. You also may lose some weight which will also be good for you.

Inflammation and Depression

Chronic pain and inflammation relief

Our brains interact with every function of our bodies, which is why it is often difficult to isolate particular relationships. Recently, however, some researchers and physicians are noticing a relationship between one of our bodies' defence mechanisms and depression.

According to several studies, hormones released by the immune system and markers related to inflammation "were positively correlated with depression." Robert Hedaya, DFAPA www.wholepsych.com. Simply put, the more depression we experience, the more inflammation will accompany it.

Most of us with depression are well aware that aches and pains accompany our brain illness, and so will easily see the link between inflammation and depression, but but we may not be aware that depression often co-exists (or is "co-morbid") with many other inflammation/immune disorders such as heart disease, diabetes, Chrone's disease, autoimmune diseases, cancers, HIV, and Multiple Sclerosis.

A proposal published online in the journal Molecular Psychiatry even suggests that depression is a by-product of an evolutionary development intended to fight off infection, since inflammation is like an over-reaction by the immune system. Even when people with depression aren't fighting an infection, their levels of inflammation are higher than normal.

Since stress can activate the immune system, it makes sense that depression is linked to the immune system response called inflammation. Some research actually suggests that by decreasing inflammation, depression can be reduced.

This evidence that depression and the immune system may be linked could lead to new approaches in the fight against depression.

Inflammation is a complex biological response by tissues in response to something that is perceived to be harmful, such as bacteria or viruses, irritants, injury, or disease. Inflammation can manifest itself in many ways, such as the runny nose associated with allergies and hay fever. In this case, the body is generating excess fluids in an attempt to flush the irritant out of our noses. Another mild example is the reaction seen after receiving a small cut on a finger. The redness seen around the cut is due largely to the body's immune system fighting a potential infection while at the same time encouraging a scab to form.

More serious diseases that have inflammation as a key component include arthritis, atherosclerosis, and even certain forms of cancer.

Inflammation can be divided into two broad types. Acute inflammation is the initial, rapid response to a harmful stimulation, such as a splinter. Various cells rapidly arrive on the scene to isolate the problem area, remove pathogens and harmful substances, and to stimulate scar formation and healing. Acute inflammation rarely lasts more than a few days.

Chronic inflammation is essentially a persistent acute inflammation. Chronic inflammation is present when an area of the body is constantly being exposed to a harmful stimulation. In this case, the harmful stimulation could be a persistent foreign body, or even a normal part of the body that our bodies are mistakenly recognizing as foreign.

It is this latter category of chronic inflammation that most interests us. In other words, there are a number of "autoimmune" diseases in which the immune system believes a normal part of our body is actually foreign. The body is responding to a body part as if it were infected or somehow foreign. Examples of autoimmune disorders include the many forms of arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis. Other chronic inflammatory conditions include various gastric diseases, such as celiac disease and inflammatory bowel disease. Diseases of the brain, such as Alzheimer's Disease, have a strong chronic inflammation component, as do heart diseases like atherosclerosis, lung diseases, such as asthma, and many others. In summary, inflammation is a normal bodily response to a foreign stimulus. However, a "foreign"stimulus can actually be a normal part of the body that is either damaged, or which for some reason is being recognized by the immune system as foreign. It's really a question of balance, and keeping the immune system active enough to respond to a problem, while simultaneously keeping it in check so that it does not overreact.

Inflammation is your immune system response to any injury in your body. So when cholesterol assaults your artery walls – you guessed it – the immune system responds with inflammation. Now if your choice is to ingest carbohydrates that happen to be rich in soluble fiber into your body – then you just may head off the inflammation process by having cleared out some of that cholesterol

The University of Massachusetts Medical School has been following a group of more than 500 people for a little over a year. They have been measuring this groups' blood levels of CRP. This is the marker of inflammation I talk about.

The 500 people have been asked to detail their diets – especially paying attention to their fiber intake. The people who have eaten the most fiber – more than 20 grams a day – have exhibited 63% less inflammation than the people who ate a low fiber diet. So I say

Now know this – the 20 grams of fiber per day is the minimum recommended healthy amount by most of the experts. If I qualify as an expert and I believe I do – that is also my recommendation – after all I am a wellness coach and mentor for many of you – I wish to make you healthy if I can!

So why should you want to lower your cholesterol you may ask, although. I hope you are aware that there is little question that persistently high blood sugar increases the threat of your heart attacks. Once again we can blame the free radicals – these compounds oxidize cholesterol particles – making them more dangerous to your arteries.

Now how do we clean or clear our arteries – you got it – by eating a diet that contains at least 20 grams of fiber. That does not seem (at least to me) difficult for you to do. You also may lose some weight and that may also be good for you. Going forward I will focus on health issues and healthy living. And as always you must live well to be well. to your wellness-

Some clinicians believe the answer to back lies in your muscles. Muscles are thought to be the cause of low back pain and other common pain problems.

Pain that originates from the muscles and connective tissue is often referred to as myofascial pain; similarly, Myofascial Pain Syndrome is frequently the diagnosis used to describe the problem. Further, trigger point pain is often considered to be the same as myofascial pain, so it helps to fully understand how trigger points affect muscles and connective tissue, like tendons and ligaments. Trigger points are small nodules, or knots, in the muscle that when pressed produce pain locally and often at a distant area. For example, if you are experiencing pain in your trapezius muscle (a large muscle that supports the upper arm) you may experience trigger point pain that radiates to the upper arm. Trigger point pain may even lead you to believe that the pain you are feeling originates in the upper arm, rather than the trapezius! Doctors inject trigger points, often with varying results.

When trigger point injections are given in hopes of relieving muscle pain, there are several inconsistencies:

  • Doctors choose from several different drugs, including lidocaine, steroids, botox, or sometimes nothing (known as dry needling.)
  • Needle length varies from very short (5/8 in) to long (3 ½ in.)
  • The injection site may be just the painful nodule in the muscle or the entire muscle, including the areas where the muscle attaches to bone or fascia.
  • After injections, patients generally receive some type of recommendation for exercise.

Since muscle injections can vary greatly depending on the clinician giving them, there is currently a variety of research that seems to be unable to determine if muscle injections are a valid approach to the treatment of chronic low back or neck and shoulder pain.

The damage from chronic inflammation

Here are the areas to monitor where chronic inflammation can be the root cause of cell damage and death.

  • High blood pressure heart failure, where there is a chronic inflammation of the blood vessels and the heart pump has become weaker over time, the body holds onto fluid excessively to help the heart pump more blood volume to each and every part of the body. This actually weakens the heart further, strains the kidneys and worsens the underlying high blood pressure.
  • Allergy sufferers, the immune system over-reacts to pollen, cat dander, ragweed or some other environmental or food product by producing excessive immune responses and resulting in chronic inflammation. The symptoms of allergies we all know include watery, itchy eyes, runny nose and nasal congestion, wheezing, hives and more. Some allergies are life-threatening.
  • The latest science has confirmed that even brain diseases, including Alzheimer's disease and multiple sclerosis, are inflammatory in nature.
  • The growing world wide epidemic of obesity and insulin resistance is a direct result of chronic inflammation, caused mainly by excessive fat in the internal organs sending out inflammatory bio-chemicals throughout the body.

Heart Disease and Inflammation

Original Article @ David Ogdens Blog

Nopalea Cactus Juice
Natural Inflammation and Pain Relief

I came across an article recently written by well-know cardiologist, who stated that cholesterol is not the enemy but inflammation caused by numerous substances is the real death sentence. This same doctor has performed over 5000 heart surgeries and has been named as one of the top doctors in the country for many years.

The link between cholesterol and heart disease was established by the "Framingham study" in 1961 and the war on cholesterol began. At this time, the big drug companies and lobbyists saw the writing on the wall and the money that could be made. Soon after, the low-fat theory was born and the Food Pyramid came into play promoting manufactured, low-fat foods filled with sugar, processed starches and unhealthy oils.

These recommendations are no longer scientifically or morally defensible. The discovery a few years ago that inflammation in the artery wall is the real cause of heart disease is slowly leading to a paradigm shift in how heart disease and other chronic ailments will be treated. The established dietary recommendations from the 60's have created epidemics of obesity and diabetes, the consequences of which are not only affecting older adults but to the kids of the future.

Despite the fact that 25% of the population takes expensive statin medications and despite the fact we have reduced the fat content of our diets, more Americans will die this year of heart disease than ever before. The numbers don't lie. Statistics from the American Heart Association show that 75 million Americans currently suffer from heart disease, 20 million have diabetes and 57 million have pre-diabetes.

Simply stated, without inflammation being present in the body, there is no way that cholesterol would accumulate in the wall of the blood vessel and cause heart disease and strokes. Without inflammation, cholesterol would move freely throughout the body as nature intended. It is inflammation that causes cholesterol to become trapped. Inflammation is not complicated — it is quite simply your body's natural defence to a foreign invader such as a bacteria, toxin or virus. The cycle of inflammation is perfect in how it protects your body from these bacterial and viral invaders. However, if we chronically expose the body to injury by toxins or foods the human body was never designed to process, a condition occurs called chronic inflammation. Chronic inflammation is just as harmful as acute inflammation is beneficial.

We have simply followed the recommended mainstream diet that is low in fat and high in polyunsaturated fats and carbohydrates, not knowing we were causing repeated injury to our blood vessels. This repeated injury creates chronic inflammation leading to heart disease, stroke, diabetes and obesity.

What are the biggest culprits of chronic inflammation? Quite simply, they are the overload of simple, highly processed carbohydrates (sugar, flour and all the products made from them) and the excess consumption of omega-6 vegetable oils like soybean, corn and sunflower that are found in many processed foods. Pretty much everything you find in the middle aisles of the grocery store.

Lower back pain will affect up to 80% of us at some stage in our lives.
Pain in your lower back can come from many sources but the most common anatomical structures causing lower back pain are your discs, nerves, joints, ligaments and muscles. Each of these structures can be strained, torn or impinged – causing your symptoms of lower back pain. This results in an inflammatory response – causing pain. Putting it simply – the inflammation causes the pain.

As a general guideline, when symptoms have occurred for a known reason and disappear within 72 hours there isn't much cause for concern. However, if pain lasts longer than 72 hours and occurs for no apparent reason then it is a good idea to seek medical advice from your doctor or a Physiotherapist who specializes in lower back pain.

Lower back pain is caused by poor posture – either over time or as a result of a poor lifting technique or through a direct impact. I have found that while each lower back pain client has an individual story, the underlying common factor is always poor posture.

Let's have a look at the four main causes of lower back pain in some more detail:

  1. A Poor sitting posture: Bad sitting posture puts excess strain on joints, ligaments, muscles, discs and nerves. Over time this results in a breakdown and strain on one or more of these structures, resulting in lower back pain.
  2. Poor lifting technique: This is a dominant cause of lower back pain. If lift incorrectly over time – the breakdown of your tissues will occur. Also, someone who is not used to lifting can strain their back from a once-time poor lifting technique.
  3. Road Accidents: These can cause tears in your ligaments and muscles and cause the pain associated with whiplash injury.
  4. Various medical conditions: Arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, scoliosis and disc degeneration – these conditions can all be associated with lower back pain. Though manual therapy and exercises may not cure your medical condition, the symptoms of your condition can be treated effectively with manual therapy and related exercises – and vastly improve your quality of life.
The most effective treatments for lower back pain are:
  • Mobilization of the affected area with a healthcare professional.
  • A good Rest/Activity balance (essential at first).
  • Posture Correction.
  • Stretching – gently and before the point of pain.
  • Strengthening exercises (gentle at first).
  • cactus Juice to relieve inflammation
It is essential that following your successful treatment – you continue good postural techniques and strength exercises to prevent further episodes of lower back pain.

Cactus Juice Chronic Inflammation and Pain Relief

Natural Inflammation and Pain Relief

During past few days I have been suffering from severe dental pain and inflammation, so I have been researching product that can bring the pain under control. Yesterday I started using Nopalea and that has helped a lot with gingivitis, but there are other things you could take as well. Anbesol (benzocaine) is a topical product to use in the mouth to numb pain, but Aleve (naproxen) and Motrin/Advil (ibuprofen) are NSAIDs (non-steroid anti-inflammatory drug) used to treat pain by bringing down swelling. The main concern with these medications is that over time, they can cause bleeding in the GI (gastrointestinal) tract which includes the oesophagus, leading into the stomach, the stomach, and the intestines, so if you have a history of ulcers or GI bleeding, NSAIDs may not be the right pain relievers for you.

An alternative is Tylenol (acetaminophen), as it works differently, but it does not reduce inflammation. NSAIDs work by reducing the effects of prostaglandins, which cause inflammation, pain, and fever in the body. Two enzymes, cyclooxygenase 1 (COX-1) and cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) make the prostaglandins work. COX-1 makes prostaglandins that support platelets and protect the stomach lining. When they are blocked, the platelets cannot cause the blood to clot as easily. Cox-2 makes the prostaglandins that cause inflammation, swelling, and as a result, pain. The NSAIDs, Mobic (meloxicam) is thought to go down the COX-1 pathway less than most of the NSAIDs. Scientists were able to make COX-2 inhibitors, which did not go down the COX-1 pathway much, but most of them (Vioxx, Bextra, etc.) were removed from the market, as they caused heart problems.

Celebrex (celecoxib) is a COX-2 inhibitor that is still on the market and is considered safe, as long as the person taking it does not have any past heart problems or risk factors for them

So there you have it, I will stick to using Nopalea and Ibuprofen and also changing my toothpaste to one that is more effective in fighting gum disease.

I have had a tooth problem for the past week, it started with what I thought was a loose tooth which was crowned and I though may be it was a gum problem, but then I realised it was the crown that was moving, so I went to the dentist. He diagnosed a case of Gingivitis or inflammation of the gum.

Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums caused by plaque and it seems in my case the plaque had undermined the crown and my tooth was decaying which is why the crown was loose. The dentist removed the crown and cleaned it and the tooth before replacing it. He advised me that I need to treat the gingivitis with hydrogen peroxide mouth wash. I have alternated the mouthwash with nopalea cactus juice which provides fast reaction to the pain and inflammation, by sipping one ounce of chilled juice and swilling it around the inflamed area. The pain disappears without the need to resort to pain killing drugs.

Now I know that plaque induced Gingivitis can be brought on my using partial dentures I will be more thorough in my dental hygiene.

Vitamin D has long been known to contribute to bone health by promoting the absorption of calcium. In recent years, much attention has been paid to its possible immune and inflammatory benefits. Low vitamin D levels have been associated with several diseases including asthma, cancer, diabetes, and arthritis.

A group of Researchers from Denver Colorado published a paper in the journal of immunology which could prove interesting as it is estimated that 1 billion people around the world are vitamin D deficient. Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to various inflammatory diseases. However, the mechanism by which vitamin D reduces inflammation remains poorly understood until now.

"This newly identified DNA-binding site for the vitamin-D receptor, and the specific pathways inhibited by higher levels of vitamin D provide a plausible mechanism for many of the benefits that have been associated with vitamin D"
said Dr. Goleva. The lead researcher who continued
"The fact that we showed a dose-dependent and varying response to levels commonly found in humans also adds weight to the argument for vitamin D's role in immune and inflammatory conditions".

In the light of this research, if you are suffering from long term inflammation you might consider checking that you are not vitamin D deficient.

Cactus Juice Chronic Inflammation and Pain Relief

Inflammation is a natural process of the body, a protective mechanism the body uses against trauma. Think of when you take a bad fall, you get bruised and pain arises. The immune system sends out an army of chemical substances to go to the injured area. That is why that area gets red and inflamed for a few days. Inflammation becomes problematic when it starts becoming chronic.

Just as the plants in your garden need a good mixture of sun and rain to thrive, we all need a measure of inflammation to survive. Acute inflammation is the short-term immune response our bodies mount in cases of trauma, infection, and allergy. Whether you have broken a bone, burned yourself on a hot stove, or been exposed to a foreign microorganism, the body is programmed to carry out a similar response. During this response, it will identify the infectious or dangerous substance, determine which cells are non-threatening and which ones are. Assess the level of the threat, mount a response, and repair any resulting damage. In a perfect world, this response occurs just as it should, releasing pro-inflammatory compounds when needed and then turning them off with anti-inflammatory compounds when the threat has been stamped out.

Chronic inflammation however arises when this response is not completely turned off or extinguished. It acts like a slow-burning fire, continuing to stimulate pro-inflammatory immune cells when they may not be needed. What happens when these excess immune cells are circulating in our systems? Chronic inflammation can slowly spread and lead to serious metabolic breakdown, with vast implications for your long-term health.

You may have heard that disorders like rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and eczema stem from inflammation. But chronic inflammation has now been connected to a host of modern diseases, from obesity, diabetes, atherosclerosis, and high blood pressure, to Alzheimer's, osteoporosis, Parkinson's, cancer, and a host of others; all being chronic and degenerative illnesses. Even biological aging, is rooted in chronic inflammation!

Here is a list of symptoms commonly associated with low-grade chronic inflammation:

  • Body aches and pains
  • congestion
  • Frequent infections
  • Diarrhoea
  • Dry eyes
  • Indigestion
  • Shortness of breath
  • Skin outbreaks
  • Swelling
  • Stiffness
  • Weight gain/obesity
The good news is that there are so many things you can do to cool your inflammation — even if you've already been diagnosed with an inflammatory-related condition or have an elevated C-reactive protein(CRP) level, doing something about it now is one way to ensure aging with vitality and strength. Simple things like cutting back on dairy, red meat and soda, getting more sleep, regular exercise (without overdoing it), and supplementing with natural anti-inflammatories can make a difference.
