Curcumin is a component of turmeric that possesses antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It is effective as an anti-inflammatory because it regulates nitric oxide in our bodies which can be elevated by levels of radiation or tissue damage. Nitric oxide can run rampant throughout the body and be the catalyst in many inflammatory-induced illnesses. Curcumin is now being used to help Rheumatoid arthritis to reduce the inflammation of joints; Alzheimer's, where it regulates the amyloid beta plaque before it gets out of control which is considered the hallmark of the disease; Diabetes, where in laboratory tests curcumin has been shown to improve rat's blood sugar levels; Heart disease, by supporting the good cholesterol (HDL

Just half a teaspoon of another spice Cinnamon can dramatically reduce blood glucose levels in those with type2 diabetes. cinnamon is also proved to reduce triglycerides, LDL,(bas cholesterol)and total cholesterol, as well as ward off urinary tract infection. the Cinnamon we purchase in stores is usually called cassia and is not real cinnamon, which is called Ceylon. the two spices don't come from the same plant but they do offer an anti-coagulant property. the best way to tell if your cinnamon comes from Ceylon is to but sticks that have multiple layers in them and grind them yourself. Cassia sticks are the solid ones.

Pain and Inflammation Relief for Gout

Gout is often referred to as the old mans disease as it more commonly effects men over 40, however women after menopause, and those who drink alcohol, and people who take certain medicines, such as hydrochlorothiazide and other water pills, may have higher levels of uric acid in the blood. Gouty arthritis is a common cause of a sudden onset of a painful, hot, red, swollen joint, particularly in the foot at the big toe. Gout is definitively diagnosed by detecting uric acid (monosodium urate) crystals in an aspirated sample of the joint fluid. These uric acid crystals can accumulate in the joint and tissues around the joint over years, intermittently triggering repeated bouts of acute inflammation. Repeated "attacks" of gouty arthritis, or "flares," can damage the joint and lead to chronic arthritis.

To reduce the chance of contracting for gout, you should do the following:

  • Follow a low-cholesterol, low-fat diet. People with gout have a higher risk for heart disease. This diet would not only lower your risk for gout but also your risk for heart disease. Control your cholesterol.
  • Avoid foods that are high in purines (the biochemical in foods that is metabolised into uric acid), including shellfish and red meats.
  • Slowly lose weight. This can lower your uric acid levels. Losing weight too rapidly can occasionally precipitate gout attacks.
  • Restrict your intake of alcohol, especially beer.
  • Stay hydrated.
  • Increase your intake of dairy products, such as nonfat milk and yogurt, because they can lower the frequency of gout attacks.
  • Avoid fructose, such as in corn syrup.
Living with Gout
  1. Take medications as prescribed.
  2. While a joint is hot and swollen, you may want to use a cane or similar support to keep your weight off that joint.
  3. It may be helpful to keep the swollen joint elevated above your chest as much as possible.
  4. Ice packs can be helpful in relieving pain and reducing inflammation.
  5. Maintaining adequate hydration is key for minimizing the frequency and intensity of attacks.
  6. Cactus juice may decrease the intensity and severity of attacks.

Pain and Inflammation Relief for Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a long-term disease that leads to inflammation of the joints and surrounding tissues. It can also affect other organs.

Exactly what causes rheumatoid arthritis is not known but it is usually triggered by a combination of factors, including an abnormal autoimmune response, genetic susceptibility, and some environmental or biologic trigger, such as a viral infection or hormonal changes.

Your bodies immune system will respond by becoming inflamed as it starts fighting infection and heals wounds and injuries. White blood cells are mobilized to rid the body of any foreign proteins, such as a virus. The masses of blood cells that gather at the injured or infected site produce factors to repair wounds, clot the blood, and fight any infections. In the process the surrounding area becomes inflamed and some healthy tissue is injured.

Rheumatoid arthritis usually affects joints on both sides of the body equally. Wrists, fingers, knees, feet, and ankles, it begins slowly.

If you suffer from RA be prepared for a lifetime of treatment which may in chronic cases require surgery. Massage and other therapies can help, but you need to seek alternative to prescribed medicines to avoid additional side effects.

Pain and Inflammation Relief

I have often been asked if one bottle of Nopalea cactus juice can make a difference to pain and inflammation. my answer is yes it general can. I know that it has worked for me, after just one bottle the arthritis in my fingers was greatly reduced, but you need to be aware that for some diseases if you stop taking the cactus juice the pain will return.

You are recommended to take what is regarded as a loading dose of between 3-6 oz a day to kick start the fight against inflammation and once the first bottle is finished you can reduce the daily amount so that it keeps the pain at bay. I know that just 1oz a day is great for me.

My partner also takes Nopalea on a daily basis to help her sleep at night and provide a boost in energy to start the day. Recently our monthly shipment was delayed and our inflammation began to manifest itself again until we were able to restart our dosage.

Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a chronic illness that causes physical pain and fatigue and effects 1 in 50 American, it is classified as a syndrome not a disease.

Fibromyalgia is hard to diagnose as routine laboratory testing reveals nothing about Fibromyalgia However, upon physical examination, the Fibromyalgia patient will be sensitive to pressure in certain areas of the body called tender points. To meet the diagnosis criteria, patient must have:

A. Widespread pain in all four quadrants of their body for a minimum of three months.

B. At least 11 of the 18 specified tender points.

The 18 sites used for diagnosis cluster around the neck, shoulder, chest, hip, knees and elbow regions. Although over 75 other tender points have been found to exist, they are not used for diagnostic purposes. Some experts believe that a person does not need to have 11 tender points to be diagnosed and treated for Fibromyalgia. The criterion was originally intended for research purposes and many people may have Fibromyalgia with less than 11 of the required tender points. Fibromyalgia causes many different symptoms:

  • Fatigue.
  • Irritable bowel syndrome.
  • Sleep disorders.
  • Chronic headaches.
  • Jaw pain.
  • Memory impairment.
  • Muscle pain morning stiffness.
  • Painful menstruation.
  • Numbness and tingling in the extremities.
  • Dizziness or light headedness.
  • Skin and chemical sensitivities.

Fibromyalgia's main symptom is widespread musculoskeletal pain. This pain affects the ligaments, tendons, and muscles throughout the body. Ligaments are made of tough tissues which attach to the bones in your body. Tendons help to attach muscles to your bones. Muscles allow you to stretch and flex various body parts.

Nopalea Cactus Juice
Danger of Prescription Painkillers

A recent report from the CDC in the USA showed that 40 American die from prescription painkillers every day, this is a frightening figure. as far back as 2008, 40% of the deaths involved the use of prescription opioid pain relievers such as codeine, fentanyl, hydrocodone, morphine, and oxycodone, the new report shows. This is up from 25% in 1999. The number of drug-related deaths involving opioids actually tripled from 1999 to 2008.

The number of deaths from drug poisonings in the U.S. has increased six fold since 1980.

In 2008, more than 41,000 people in the U.S. died from intentional and accidental poisonings. Nine out of 10 poisoning deaths were due to drugs.

In 2008, these deaths exceeded the number of deaths from automobile accidents in the U.S., making poisoning the leading cause of injury death in the country, according to a report from the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics that focused on the time period from 1980 to 2008.

Deaths involving drug poisoning may also involve illicit drugs. Cocaine was involved in about 5,100 deaths and heroin was involved in about 3,000 deaths in 2008. Drug poisoning deaths were higher among males aged 45 to 54, non-Hispanic whites, and American Indian or Alaskan Natives in 2008, according to the new data. Drug Deaths Surpass Car Crash Deaths

Sadly, the new findings are

"right on target,"
says James T. O'Donnell, a pharmacologist at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.
"What we are seeing is really a switch from illegal drug death to prescription drug death,"
he says. "I think that it will get worse before it gets better."

There are many reasons for this uptick. There was a change in how pain was treated in the early 1990s, he says.

"Treatment of pain became much more aggressive....This increased the number of people who were taking pain medications."

It is simple math: More people taking more pills equals more accidental and intentional overdoses.

"There are leftover pills in the house and that means people will use them,.....This is like leaving loaded gun around the home." O'Donnell says.
"People are not just overdosing on one thing, .... Many people don't realize you are not supposed to drink alcohol when you take opioids."

The moral of this story is to take great care with your prescription drugs and seek safer alternatives for you long term pain and inflammation relief.

Chronic Pain and Inflammation Relief

Back pain is no joke! According to the National Institutes of Health, 80% of people will suffer from back pain at one point or another in their lifetime. Something minuscule can trigger the back pain. Below are six quick ideas to help you reduce lower back pain

  1. If you sit in an office remember it is important stand up and have break, because no matter how much support a chair provides it is still not enough to avoid lower back pain. Sitting reduces the flow of blood to your supportive discs and can add 30% more pressure to your back as opposed to standing. So get up, move around, stretch out! Do this at least once an hour. Also, while your sitting, make sure your posture is correct. Head straight, shoulders back and keep your feet firmly planted on the floor.
  2. Check Your Footwear- High heels are not ideal, they can put stress on your knees, hips and back. Trying wearing heels that are less then 3 inches high. Also, avoid backless shoes, with your heal flopping around you are losing support. Your shoe should hold your foot firmly in place!
  3. Lose Weight- Shedding some excess pounds will help lighten the load. When you carry extra weight in your mid section it propels your pelvic forward, throwing off the alignment of your spine. If weight is your problem, consider making a healthy lifestyle change, like exercising and eating right.
  4. If you are a women with larger breasts make sure you are wearing a supportive bra! The weight in your breasts can cause you to hunch forward putting strain on your shoulders and neck. Get fitted by a professional, it will make all the difference!
  5. Technology- We know you love your iPhone or tablet or that fancy new laptop, but they have not been so kind to us in return- or at least not on our backs. The head down position strains our necks and our backs. Try looking at your smart phones or laptops head on instead.
  6. Your Hectic Life- Stress can be a large contributor to back pain. Muscles start to tense up when you are stressed. So relax! Lighter aerobic exercises like walking can help reduce your back pain and relieve stress, or try yoga!
Take a minute to examine your everyday life. These are quick fixes most people can stand to make. If you are seriously suffering from back pain and these simple changes don't help, contact your pain consultant.

Chronic Pain and Inflammation Relief

Pain is a common occurrence, ranging from headaches and migraines,to chronic pain from accidents, burns and inflammation. How one controls pain can improve the healing process, however there is a downside of causing unwanted side effects.

There are two pain types of pain, Acute and chronic, both of which can occur at the same time. The euphemism "breakthrough pain" is one type of acute pain an individual can undergo. This pain can occur because of movement or activity, but it can also happen when the body has involuntary movements, such as expelling gas or muscle twitches. Medication can be prescribed for the "break" in pain that around the clock medicating provides.

Acute pain may occur in the same area as the chronic pain, but not always. Noting the events leading up to the episode of breakthrough pain can help caregivers adjust activity levels if needed. In some cases, the area in pain and/or the event that contributes to it cannot be pinned down. Recording episodes, including seemingly random incidents, will still help when pain management is reviewed.

When pain resurfaces before the next scheduled dose of medication and isn't associated with a voluntary or involuntary action, the physician can be notified to examine the timing and amount of around the clock medication. Noticing the time of pain onset and keeping a record can help the doctor make a decision about keeping pain relief consistent.

Chronic pain is consistent and "stable." While there may be some fluctuating of intensity, it is "reliable" in its characteristics. Medication for this type of pain is generally around the clock to provide continuity of relief. Over time, medications are adjusted to account for changes in the pain cycle, including a patient's tolerance to a given dosage.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease, which means the body's immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue. This leads to long-term (chronic) inflammation.

The underlying cause of autoimmune diseases is not fully known.

Lupus effect people in many different way such as chronic fatique and listlessness which sleep will not cure. This is the tired of the flu, or a virus complicated with a cold complicated by running a marathon complicated by being run over by a truck, if that makes sense. THAT kind of tired.

Nighttime sleep even when taking medications is spasmodic, because of the constant pain which is something like suffering permanent sunburn over the whole of your body.

Treatment for more severe lupus may include:

  • High-dose corticosteroids or medications to decrease the immune system response
  • Cytotoxic drugs (drugs that block cell growth) if you do not get better with corticosteroids, or whose symptoms get worse when the stop taking them. These medicine have serious, severe side effects. You should be closely monitored by your doctor.
Side effects are hair loss, mood swings and weight gain

The longer you take pain killers the less effective they become and of course many have side effects which can cause other health problems, so you are in a cleft stick.

I was reading about someone who takes oxycodone which greatly reduces pain however it also causes both constipation and a lack of appetite, which I would think was quite serious as they then have to take yet more medicine to deal with the side effects.

My last post was about alternative therapies and its in time like these that people need to start looking outside the box for chronic pain relief and try to get off prescription drugs as soon as possible.

I recently gave a bottle of Nopalea cactus juice to my Doctor who had pains in her legs and she was amazed at how effective it was, so much so that her husband also started using for knee pain.

Hip pain can can be caused by injury such as a fracture which is common in elderly people, muscle strain ,arthritis or Trochanteric bursitis which is an extremely common problem that causes inflammation of the bursa over the outside of the hip joint.

Hip replacement surgery might be one method of relief so you are able to have chronic pain free days, allowing you walk with your children and possible grandchildren to amusement parks and walk down the aisle at your child's wedding.

Be aware though that sometime hip replacement does not work and pain will return as your body reacts with the implant.

Treatment of hip arthritis should begin with the most basic options and progress to the more involved, which may include surgery. Not all treatments are appropriate for every patient.

Hip replacement is generally reserved for patients who have tried all of the other treatments and are still left with significant pain during normal activities. Patients who have occasional pain, are able to participate in athletic activities, or have not tried non-operative treatments are probably not ready for a hip replacement. Non-operative treatment options include, losing weight to replace the strain,or taking anti inflammatories and joint supplements.

People who suffer from chronic pain and inflammation are increasingly seeking alternative alternative sources for pain relief and hospital in the USA have begun to realise that they can increase their revenue by providing complementary medical services. 2007 expenditure on alternative therapies in the USA amounted to $33,9 and some 40% of adults used alternate therapies in 2008.

The American Hospitals and Samueli Institute survey for 2010 showed that 42 percent of the 714 hospitals that responded offered at least one such therapy in 2010, a significant jump from just five years earlier, when 27 percent of hospitals offered such treatments,

Hospitals offer most of their integrative therapies on an outpatient basis, usually at designated centres located at or near the hospitals. The treatments are typically aimed at relieving symptoms of serious or chronic illness: A physician might prescribe that a patient get acupuncture for relief from nausea while undergoing chemotherapy, for example, or recommend massage or meditation to help reduce anxiety and stress.

"Patient demand not only determines why hospitals choose to offer these services in the first place, but it also determines the modalities [types of treatments] they choose to offer,"
says survey designer Sita Ananth, director of knowledge services at the Samueli Institute.

According to the survey, the top treatments offered at outpatient centres were massage therapy, acupuncture and guided imagery. (The latter uses mental techniques, including visualization, to achieve such goals as reducing stress.)

"We're looking for ways to improve the patient experience and to improve outcomes,"
says Todd Linden, president and chief executive of the Grinnell Regional Medical Center, a rural community hospital in Grinnell, Iowa, which has provided complementary therapies for over ten years. For example, patients awaiting surgery are offered a 10- to 15-minute
"comfort massage" to help reduce anxiety. After a massage, "IVs go in easier, people come out of anaesthesia quicker and some physicians say their patients have less pain,"
he says.

For their part, hospitals find that patients are pleased to have the options, and that is often reason enough for them to offer the services. The hospital survey found that patient satisfaction was the No. 1 measure used to evaluate the success of a hospital's complementary and alternative medicine program, cited by 85 percent of respondents. Only 42 percent said they were using health outcomes to measure the success of their programs.

Fibromyalgia (FM) is one of the most commonly diagnosed soft tissue conditions in most branches of health care, including chiropractic which results in pain and inflammation.

Commonly utilized chiropractic treatment options found to be beneficial include massage, muscle strengthening exercises, acupuncture, spinal manipulation, movement/body awareness, vitamins, herbs, and dietary modification. Cognitive behavioural therapy, not typically a chiropractic specific form of care, was also reported to be of significant benefit, as well as aerobic exercise. This study places chiropractic in a very favourable position in the management of FM.

Chiropractic is unique in that it encompasses many non-drug, non-surgical forms of treatment, making it appealing to many who do not want to risk the chances of drug related side effects and post-surgical complications. Patients with FM require a multi-dimensional treatment approach and a health care provider versed in whole-body, holistic concepts is in the best position to help this population.

Fibromyalgia can be primary where the specific cause is not well understood or secondary to an underlying injury or condition. Sometimes, it is difficult to determine the exact cause as other conditions can be present and/or arise simultaneously with FM making it difficult to differentiate between primary and secondary. When other conditions are present, sometimes attending those specific conditions will improve the status of FM and focus on treatments that address all of the patient's physical and emotional health issues yields the most patient satisfying results.

Some doctors belive that Fibromyalgia is a fictitious disease, however Fibromyalgia is defined as a chronic wide-spread pain disease. It's can't be detected on a blood test or seen on an MRI. It's invisible and because if that some doctors still believe it's a psychological condition. The cause is still unknown and the effects can be devastating. Every system is effected.

Common symptoms of fibromyalgia — also known as fibromyalgia syndrome or FMS — may include:

  • Pain
  • Anxiety
  • Concentration and memory problems — known as "fibro fog"

  • Headache
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Morning stiffness

One can see from the above list, the disorder can present itself in many different forms so is difficult to diagnose and living with the disease is a lifelong battle against pain. There are a number of treatments which may be used to improve sleeping and control the disorder during the day. One treatment is to use An antipsychotic (or neuroleptic)which is a tranquillizing psychiatric medication primarily used to manage psychosis and slows the impulses to the brain. However there are side effect to be considered as well. –

Opioids are a recommended treatment for cancer and chronic, non-cancer pain — pain that lasts more than six months and comes from a non-cancer source such as osteoarthritis or chronic low back pain.

Dr. Spencer Dorn and his team at University of North Carolina medical school carried out a study on the use of opioids for treatment of chronic abdominal and discovered that this had more than doubled between 1997-2008 in the USA.

There is concern in the medical profession not only in the USA but also Canada in the general misuse of Opioids which can trigger other gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and constipation, and may even worsen abdominal pain

Chronic abdominal pain is a common problem but is often incurable, which can make it challenging for doctors to help patients, the researchers said.

"Writing a prescription for a painkiller may be the path of least resistance; doing so may satisfy the patient's demand for relief and mitigate the clinician's possible feelings of inadequacy,"
Dorn said in a journal news release. from the journal Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology in December.

Numerous factors have likely contributed to the sharp rise in the use of opioids to treat chronic abdominal pain, the researchers said. These include a tendency to generalize recommendations for opioids' use in treating pain and widespread direct-to-consumer advertising.

One needs to always contact a medical professional before using opioids for chronic pain relief

Chronic Pain and Inflammation relief for sickle Cell anaemia

Sickle cell anaemia is a disease passed down through families in which red blood cells form an abnormal crescent shape, rather than a normal oval or disk shape.

The sickle shape is caused by an abnormal type of haemoglobin S, which results in it carrying less oxygen and in addition its unusual shape causes friction as it passes through blood vessels resulting in pain and inflammation.

Sickle cell disease is much more common in people of African and Mediterranean descent. It is also seen in people from South and Central America, the Caribbean, and the Middle East. Symptoms.

Blood level inflammation can normally be diagnosed by taking Erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein blood test. The redblood cells of patients with Sickle cell anaemia is seen as no longer being oval but distorted into sickle shape which also causes abrasion as it passes through the blood vessels which, created inflammation and pain and does allow the cell to carry as much oxygen as a health cell. This can cause unbearable pain and may require blood transfusions and analgesics such as morphine to keep it under control. Many of these prescribed analgesics have side effects which leads to suffers seeking more natural resources to reduce pain and inflammation.

Lymphoma is a cancer in the lymphatic cells of the immune system. one form of lymphoma is Diffuse Large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL)which is the most common type of Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) and accounts for over 40% of newly-diagnosed cases of NHL in the United States each year.

Chemotherapy is the standard treatment for cancererous B cells but can produced a number of unwanted side affects in the intestines, causing vomiting and nausea. Recent research at the University of California in San Diego, headed by Dr Irene Pedersen discovered a link between DLBCL and inflammation and they published the result in EMBO Molecular Medicine.

A key factor that promotes inflammation is a protein called TNFa. When the researchers gave DLBCL cells TNFa, their levels of miR155 went up while SHIP protein levels went down. In contrast, when TNFa was blocked, SHIP expression increased and the growth of the tumour cells slowed down.

The researchers didn't stop with cells in a dish, they also wanted to see if blocking TNFa would result in slower tumour growth. Indeed, they found that mice treated with TNFa blocking antibodies showed reduced growth of DLBCL tumours.

Taken together, Dr. Pedersen and colleagues showed that reducing inflammation is an effective way to help fight DLBCL. The implications of this work give clinicians yet another tool in their arsenal of weapons against lymphoma, and possibly other types of cancer.

How Can You Reduce Inflammation?

Many people suffer from prolonged pain and inflammation, however before seeking was of reducing inflammation one need to take some test to classify it. Two such test are:-

  1. CRP – short for C-reactive protein, elevated in chronic inflammation.Homocysteine – elevated, usually from a lack of folic acid and/or too high iron in diet. This can can be used to access the level of inflammation caused by Inflammatory bowel disease, some forms of arthritis, Autoimmune diseases and Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
  2. MPO – short for myeloperoxidase. A relatively new test for inflammation can help determine potential cardiac risk factors such as atherosclerosis.
You need to take action, such as cutting down on alcohol, stop smoking, increasing the exercise you do because this will lower your MPO levels, and reduce you weight. you may also wish to consider taking a Diabetes test, as this can fuel inflammation, damage heart blood vessels and increase your risk of developing heart disease.

The type of foods that you eat also can effect your levels of inflammation and you need to adopt the following diet.

  • Limit sugar/refined carbohydrates. Cakes, pies, candy, some fruits, and high glycemic carbohydrates (bread, pasta), all these fuel inflammation by creating a high acid condition.
  • Eat more good fats. Add high monounsaturated fats like mixed nuts, avocado, olive oil, as well as fatty fish like salmon, tuna, mackerel, sardines a few times a week. If you eat canned tuna, choose water packed as the Omega-3?s leach into the oil packed varieties that will get drained off before eating. Or, take two 1,000 mg fish oil capsules a day.
  • Limit acid foods. High acid foods like animal meats, eggs, lemon, grapefruit, and tomato.
  • Eat more alkali foods. Yellow, dark green, vegetables like yams, kale, cucumbers fight inflammation by balancing acid with alkali.
  • Add antioxidants. Our modern diet can't possibly contain enough antioxidants to do us much good fighting inflammation. Add a good supplement that contains Vitamin C, resveratrol, E, selenium, Vitamin D3, bilberry, blueberry. Spices like turmeric (curcumin), ginger, cayenne, parsley.
  • Increase fiber. Fiber helps sweep inflammatory toxins out of your system.
  • Avoid dehydration. Our bodies thrive on water to cool itself and dilute inflammatory acids. Drink at least ½ your weight in water a day.

As one ages many people begin to suffer from pain and inflammation and takes prescription drugs for treatment, however a growing number prefer to try and avoid the harmful side effects and turn to alternative natural resources.

A Good Chiropractor for example can certainly help with upper and lower back pain, and can offer advice about posture, how you sleep and footwear all of which can contribute to back pain

There are many different exercises and stretches you can do for lower back pain treatment and this one of the most common ailments. It doesn't matter what age you are back pain can be a problem. Lower back pain treatment can be in the form of exercise and physical therapy or professional treatment as it all depends on the severity of the back problem.

Acupuncture is also growing in popularity for lower back pain treatment. The back is one of the most important areas to keep healthy in order to have the ability to move around without pain. Many people are turning to acupuncture for their backaches and muscular pains.

Stretching is one of the most effective things you can do if you feel a bit strain in your back. By stretching your back and abdomen muscles those muscles will become stronger. When those muscles are strengthened there is less chance of the occurrence of back troubles. stretching, will also loosen the muscles up making them warm and letting the blood flow throughout the muscle.

Vitamin D deficiency is a source of chronic inflammation. Vitamin D is actually a hormone, not a vitamin, and is very important in many functions of your body. Supplementation is highly recommend since deficiency is very common (and linked to many other health conditions). There is much debate currently on what doses of vitamin D you need, or even what level is normal when you get your vitamin D levels checked. There is also debate on how safe sun exposure is as a source of vitamin D. Almost everyone in the northern US or Europe is deficient in vitamin D and this leads to many health issues (depression and MS for example). So although there is currently no consensus on how much vitamin D you need or which source it is safest to get it from, there is consensus that it is important and you need adequate amounts!

Anti-inflammatory herbs to add to cooking include turmeric (also comes in supplement form – use 200 mg twice daily), ginger, and rosemary. Ginger makes a great tea, or adds flavour to water. Teas in general (white and green tea especially) are rich in antioxidant compounds that can benefit inflammation. Other foods that can contribute to an anti-inflammatory diet include dark chocolate, garlic, and red onions.

Another herb that shows great benefit is boswellia or "Indian frankincense". Cetyl myristoleate is an oil found in fish and butter which acts as an anti-inflammatory and joint lubricant – it can be taken orally or topically. Another topical agent which can have an effect for arthritis pain is capsaicin cream which comes from hot peppers and works by depleting substance P (which transmits pain signals to the brain). Gamma linolenic acid (GLA) is an essential fatty acid that is beneficial. GLA supplements come in the form of evening primrose, black currant oil, and borage oil. A friend of mine recently told me about essential oils, and I will try some for my mom and see how it benefits her. Resveratrol is another helpful compound for inflammation.

Proteolytic enzymes taken between meals are great for inflammation and have been shown to reduce joint degeneration. They work by neutralizing pro-inflammatory substances so that repair and regeneration of tissues can occur. One of these enzymes is bromelain which is also found in pineapple and another is papain which is found in papaya. Products vary widely, so I recommend you follow the labeling instructions for dosing. Pancreatin may interfere with folic acid absorption, so make sure you are supplementing if taking this.

Glucosamine and chondroitin (as well as MSM) can be beneficial by giving your body what it needs to rebuild the cartilage and synovial fluid in your joints.

Chronic Pain and Inflammation relief

Chronic pain can be debilitating, all-consuming and even frustrating —especially when you've taken every test and tried every medication and you still hurt. You start to think maybe it's all in your head (it's not) and there's nothing else you can do (not true). Research shows the best way to control chronic pain is to tackle it from all fronts; in fact, a published review found that comprehensive pain programs - ones that address biological, psychological and social aspects of pain - are most effective at improving quality of life. For many conditions, medications help; to better manage pain, try these strategies:

  1. Move a little every day: Regular physical activity helps strengthen muscles, reduce stress and improve sleep — all of which help you control pain. And every bit of exercise helps: Researchers at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine found that short bursts of daily activity (such as walking or gardening) helped people with fibromyalgia feel and function better. Talk to your doctor to determine the safest exercises for you.
  2. Practice mindful meditation: Your negative reactions to pain — such as fear or anger — actually can make it worse. Mindfulness teaches you to observe your thoughts and feelings instead of reacting to them, so you'll learn to experience pain as a moment-to-moment sensation, which then lessens the intensity. Research shows mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) techniques can reduce chronic pain and anxiety and increase vitality.
  3. Ask about supplements: Omega-3 fatty-acid supplements may benefit arthritis, back and neck pain sufferers; and research suggests that vitamin D may help reduce fibromyalgia and bone pain. The dosing for herbal supplements may vary, some supplements have side effects, and others interact with prescription medications, so consult your doctor first.
  4. Accept your pain: That doesn't mean resigning yourself to suffer but instead changing the way you think about your condition. Research suggests if you stop trying to resist pain and learn to live with it, you'll hurt less and function better. Acceptance is about choosing to move forward and focus on the positives - the things you can do, the parts of your life you are thankful for.

Chronic Pain and Inflammation relief

Suffering from lower back pain can affect your lifestyle and can stop you from enjoying it. When you have chronic pain, it may seem like nothing else is important, making it hard to relax or even stay focus on tasks. Here are three simple suggestions to help you when you have lower back pain.

  1. Relax your back, at the first sign of pain relax again, and lay down. Laying down is a great way to ease tension and flare up. A primary factor in back pain is muscle strain, when you lie down flat it takes the weight off of your lower back muscles. One recommended way to lie down and increase relief, is to lie flat on the couch, floor, or bed, and use your feet as a support for some of your weight. After your back feels better, stand up and move around, so that your heart may send blood to affected muscles.
  2. Apply some heat. A slightly hot compress works very well on extinguishing lower back pain. Heat relaxes your bodies muscle tension, and increase blood flow, which will heal your suffering at a relatively quick rate. Applying heat makes feeling pain more difficult, this is because your brain will be concentrating more on the sensation of the warmth of the compress and not on your back-pain. A inexpensive and simple way to make a warm compress is to fill a water bottle with hot water, and wrap it in a towel. Rest on your back and rest the towel with the warm bottle on your back. Also consider a hot bath to really soothe your back pain.
  3. Supplements are a very good way to help prevent lower back pain from returning. Vitamins such as vitamin D and B12 result in a healthy spine. Vitamin D creates new bone cells, and b12 is important for a functioning nervous system. Other vitamins that are recommended for a healthy spine are vitamins A,C, K, and should be taken daily.

Chronic Pain and Inflammation relief

Chronic headaches can be debilitating. It is also unhealthy to take painkillers for long periods. More people are discovering alternative ways to relieve pain and migraines naturally by seeking help from chiropractic methods.

It is important to find a solution for chronic migraines because having this condition all the time can affect your work and general well-being. Bad headaches will cause you to perform badly at work when you cannot concentrate. Migraines can be painful enough to cause you to skip work every now and then.

Recent studies on migraines have revealed that chiropractic care can actually lessen the length and frequency of these types of headaches. Sometimes chiropractic pain relief methods can completely get rid of chronic headaches. The studies have also found that 20% of headaches are cervicogenic in nature or come from a problem in the neck area.

People who get this kind of headache will feel pain on one side of the head that extends to the neck on the same side. The pain is actually caused by a problem in the spinal cord that connects the neck and skull. The problem is not caused by something inside the head itself.

A chiropractor can help relieve pain caused by this kind of headache by applying manual chiropractic spinal cord adjustments. He may also stretch your spine to release pinched nerves between discs in your neck. He can apply soft tissue therapy or massage therapy in the affected area. Some chiropractors also use acupuncture to remedy headaches.

Popping painkillers will dull the pain, but will not address the root problem that causes these chronic headaches. So, no matter how often you take headache medication, your migraines will still return. A chiropractor can offer more permanent solutions for your chronic headaches

Slow Progress

The optimism from out last visit to out Dipolog House and lot for sale has disappeared, with very little progress from out last visit. Room painting is underway, however the Rain gutters have not been delivered and are not due for another week, this will result in missing our December deadline.

Jasmin and I had some discussion on the window tinting, I would have preferred a light blue colour to enhance the the colour of the skies but Jasmin wanted a darker grey to provide more privacy. we also need to contact the architect to design and provide a costing for fence/walls on the two open sides of our property.

So many items unfinished means it is difficult to see real progress so we will do not plan to visit again for a couple of weeks. We still have some issues on fittings which were ordered as part of the contract and regret that Mediatrix homes did not accept our proposal to have a detailed specification attached to the contract, rather than their standard wishy washy contract which is vague.
