Chronic Inflammation and Pain Relief

A recent CDC report indicated that 90% of Americans rate their health as "good" or better, yet the statistics disagree. They spend more than any other country (>$2 trillion) in healthcare, but rank a dismal 38th in overall health. What if they took even a small percentage of that amount and really focused on prevention? Not only would they be much more healthy, but they would save the country billions in the long run!

I believe they have all the technology they need to be able to focus on prevention, but currently they spend to much attention on disease care versus actual healthcare (prevention) A common definition states that health is simply the absence of disease. While there are much more complex definitions, many people base their health on the absence of certain signs and symptoms related to disease. they now know that the disease process is much more complex and consists of several steps before symptoms begin. Each disease process begins with an insult to a cell or group of cells. After this insult an inflammatory response occurs triggering our body into action. However, often times this inflammation occurs at a level that is unrecognisable or our body does not have the resources it needs to reduce the inflammation. Now that they know inflammation occurs at the beginning of the disease process, the best cure would be to reduce inflammatory markers and prevent inflammation from occurring in the first place.

I recently read an article in Chiropractic Economics that stated the 3 keys to prevention are chiropractic, nutrition, and exercise. I would like to add an addition category: Detoxification.

  1. Chiropractic- Everyone would agree that our brain is important because it tells the rest of our body what to do even when they aren't thinking about it. Getting regular adjustments helps our brain and nervous system function optimally and communicate with our vital organs.
  2. Nutrition- I believe this is the most important aspect of the 3 keys to prevention. Our body is made up of over 70 trillion cells and at any given time those cells are completing thousands of chemical reactions. If they want our brain, nervous system, and other organs to be healthy then they need proper nutrition.
  3. Exercise- Our bodies they're created to move. Without movement there would be death. I believe that our bodies they're created to move in two major ways. The first includes low intensity exercise including walking as primal humans did everyday. The second includes high intensity short duration exercise. Primal humans would occasionally have to lift heavy objects, run from danger, or chase game while hunting. Rarely did they sustain moderate intensity exercise or what they would consider today as cardio.
  4. Detoxification- Today there are over 80,000 different chemicals that man has created. Very few of them have been tested to determine the effect on the body. While the body performs millions of complex chemical reactions each second there is delicate balance that must be maintained. When it is exposed to chemicals that it doesn't recognize (toxins) it needs to be able to remove them to prevent adverse reactions or miscommunication between cells. If too many toxins accumulate our body eventually becomes confused leading to a variety of disease processes.
