Natural Pain and Inflammation Relief

Inflammation plays an important role in helping your body heal. If you've ever jammed your finger, scraped your knee, or sprained your ankle, you're already familiar with acute inflammation. Your body suffers an injury, it swells up and hurts; that tells you that you are supposed to rest and support it until it heals. Inflammation is part of your body's response to nearly any type of physical injury and is critical for health.

However, inflammation is not always as obvious or benign as the above examples. It can silently involve every cell in your body and, over time, negatively affect your health and abilities. Chronic inflammation is our enemy. Chronic inflammation puts your body's immune system in overdrive and in the process, healthy cells can be damaged. An overactive immune system can lead to cardiovascular disease, neurological disease, Alzheimer's, type II diabetes, arthritis, lung disease, cancer or autoimmunity.

How can you tell if you have chronic inflammation?

The levels of certain chemicals in your blood are known to increase with increased levels of inflammation. One of these chemical markers for inflammation is a protein called C-reactive protein (CRP). CRP is often measured in conjunction with other blood tests, and normal values are well established. From a clinical standpoint, a CRP level of less than 5 milligrams per liter of blood is considered normal. "Normal" may not be optimal, though. Many medical researchers believe that even slight elevations of CRP are tied to increased risk for heart attack, stroke, and many other diseases.

What Inflammatory Foods Are You Eating?

If you have a food intolerance, those items are activating your immune system when you eat them. You need to stop eating them or try a rotational diet. In addition, whether you are intolerant, allergic or not, the following foods are have inflammatory affects in the body and should be consumed with awareness and limitation:

  • Sugar
  • Alcohol
  • Conventional meat – cows/sheep/weren't designed to eat corn, and their feed changes the composition of their cells making them high in omega 6?s and low in Omega 3?s. They also are laden with growth hormones and antibiotics.
  • Polyunsaturated oils like corn, soybean, sunflower, safflower, cottonseed and other vegetable oils because they are high in Omega 6?s and so many prepared foods are cooked with them.
  • Transfats -Watch out for packages that claim to have zero grams per serving-that means there ARE transfats in the item, just less than they need to report (PER SERVING) – and who eats the serving size anyway?!)
  • Dairy products – it's estimated that up to 60% of the world's population can't digest dairy, and it's a common allergen that triggers inflammatory responses.
  • Processed meats -this includes anything smoked, salted, cured, or chemically preserved.
  • Refined grains (i.e. white flour, white rice, bread, pasta, baked goods.)
Nightshades, such as tomatoes, potatoes and eggplant are no-no for people who suffer from joint, digestive and nerve-muscle problems.

Natural Pain and Inflammation Relief for Fibromyalgia

Theres is no cure for fibromyalgia. The treatments we do have involve managing various symptoms, such as pain, sleep problems, headaches, irritable bowel syndrome and/or mood disorders. To date, the FDA has approved three medications for fibromyalgia: pregabalin, duloxetine hydrochloride and milnacipran, but other drugs may be prescribed, including pain relievers, antidepressants, muscle relaxants and sleep medications.

People with fibromyalgia may have difficulty tolerating these medications, so it's not unusual to try different medications with a doctor's supervision to see what works best.

Otherwise, lifestyle therapies are key. Regular physical activity or exercise can produce small to modest improvements in pain, fatigue, sleep, mood and quality of life. Even if you experience pain during exercise, stay as physically active as possible every day. Keep up with lifestyle activities such as walking the dog, stretching, putting away groceries and light housekeeping. Some people with fibromyalgia can, and eventually do, engage in a traditional exercise program. According to the National Fibromyalgia Association, walking, the use of a stationary bicycle, and aqua therapy (with a floatation device that allows you to remain upright in the pool) seem to be the most suitable activities for fibromyalgia patients. For some people, it's helpful to work with a physical therapist or an exercise physiologist.

Ideally, people with fibromyalgia should maintain a consistent level of activity every day. Fight the temptation to do too much or too little, and pace yourself. When you're feeling well, try not to overdo it by, for example, walking the mall for the entire day. When you have a flare, try to get out of bed, stretch and do light activities. If you're in pain, start off slowly, with 10 minutes of activity, then gradually work toward accumulating 30 minutes most days of the week, which is the general recommendation for wellness.

Sleep is a major problem for people with fibromyalgia, and increasing physical activity may promote better sleep. Also try a healthy diet, avoiding alcohol in the evening, cutting down on caffeine, going to bed at the same time every night, deep breathing and listening to calming music.

Managing stress can also be helpful, as many people with fibromyalgia report that their symptoms worsen during periods of stress. Deep breathing exercises, meditation, talking to friends and family, reading scripture, and writing down problems and potential solutions can sometimes be beneficial.

Other treatments that may help: acupuncture, chiropractic care, biofeedback, massage therapy, cognitive behavioural therapies, yoga, deep breathing, hypnosis and other relaxation techniques. Some people with fibromyalgia report that physical therapies, such as massage, produce an analgesic effect, providing several days of pain relief.

Arthritis is not age releated

Original Article @ David Ogdens Blog

Natural Pain and Inflammation Relief for Arthritis

According to a new report from the center for disease control (CDC), about 1 in every 5 Americans have doctor-diagnosed arthritis. If you are in an lift with more the 5 people, one of you has one of the 100 different kinds of arthritis (or rheumatic diseases). As we get older the chances of getting arthritis increases, but being young does not make you immune to getting arthritis. Two-thirds of people under 65, and 1 in 250 children, have some form of arthritis or other rheumatic condition.

One of the most common responses from patients when they go to a doctor with complaints of joint pain and stiffness is surprise if they are diagnosed with arthritis. They are surprised about a number of things, including their relatively young age and the degree of pain and disability arthritis can cause. A mistake some people make when there are told, or they suspect, they have arthritis, is to minimize it's seriousness as a medical condition, and how it may impact their young lives.

Sadly, many people ignore the problem for months, or years, during which time they self diagnose and treat themselves with every ointment, pill or herb they could find. While it is true that arthritis most commonly shows up as stiff joint pain, many other life threatening conditions might also feel that way too. It is also worth noting many kinds of arthritic conditions, from the common osteoarthritis, to the joint destroying rheumatoid arthritis, appear with the same set of initial symptoms.

People are further surprised to know that in the US over a people million a year are hospitalised for arthritic conditions. Additionally, out-of-pocket cost of arthritis can rack up thousands of dollars in medical bills per year! These costs may include everything from over the counter medications, physical therapy, prescriptions drugs and expensive injections and procedures.

It might not be too surprising to learn that people who are physical inactive are about 7% more likely to have arthritis, or that arthritis is more prevalent in obese people. What is more surprising is that people with arthritis more commonly have other chronic conditions like diabetes and heart disease.

Many patients wrongly assume that there is not much they can do prevent or threat their arthritis. The most important thing a person can do is understand how to manage their own disease; understand what exacerbation look like, and how to intervene early. It is critical to stay active and engage is regular exercise that support joints without over-stressing then. Managing your weight is an effective way of reducing stress on joints. I can not over estimate how important it is to consult your physician who will not only help take the guess work out of the diagnosis, and partner with you on your journey to wellness.

Chronic Pain Relief - Fibromyalgia

Original Article @ David Ogdens Blog

Nopalea Cactus Juice
Natural Pain and Inflammation Relief for Fibromyalgia

As many as 5 million people in the United States population (over 90 percent of them women) may have fibromyalgia, but many have yet to be diagnosed. In the meantime, they experience widespread pain and a diminished quality of life. We asked Kevin Fontaine, Ph.D., associate professor of medicine in the division of rheumatology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, to explain this puzzling syndrome.

People with fibromyalgia complain of unrelenting body pain and tenderness. They experience poor sleep and fatigue, and some have other troubling symptoms. It's not unusual for sufferers to experience irritable bowel syndrome, chronic headaches, chemical sensitivities (such as to medications, foods and fabrics), jaw pain, discomfort in the bladder, restless legs syndrome and/or a mood disorder such as depression or anxiety. Many people also report so-called "fibro fog", or an inability to concentrate and recall information.

Typically, onset of fibromyalgia pain is fairly sudden. For some patients, there is a triggering event such as an injury, illness, surgery or emotional trauma. From one day to the next, they experience an increase in feelings of pain. And these symptoms never seem to abate, although they can wax and wane for reasons that are not understood.

A person with fibromyalgia could be struggling for months or years with these symptoms, going from doctor to doctor, before finally being diagnosed.

That person should not think that they're crazy. These symptoms are legitimate, and they require medical attention.

It's important to find a doctor who will listen. Patients report that some doctors don't believe that fibromyalgia is a legitimate medical condition, which may help explain why it can take years to be diagnosed and why patients sometimes feel disrespected and even stigmatised when they try to get help.

Since a doctor relies heavily on your self-reports to make a diagnosis and to guide treatment, keep a diary to track how well you're feeling from day to day. Include:

  • Your level of pain: Note where you hurt, and rate your overall level pain on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 indicating little to no pain and 10 indicating the worst pain you've ever experienced.
  • Daytime fatigue: Jot down whether fatigue prevents you from doing any of your usual activities, such as going to work, exercising or running errands.
  • A sleep history: Write down the number of hours you slept the night before and whether you had difficulty falling or staying asleep.
  • Your mood: State whether you feel generally upbeat, mildly depressed or worse.
Fibromyalgia can be mistaken for numerous conditions, including multiple sclerosis, Lyme disease, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, diabetes, Sjogren's disease, Raynaud's disease, Parkinson's, menopause, depression…the list goes on and on. Testing can help determine if one of those conditions is actually the cause of your symptoms.

There are some clues that fibromyalgia is the actual culprit, often because other conditions are ruled out. Although the pain you feel is similar to that of arthritis, fibromyalgia produces no visible physical changes, so X-rays, biopsies and blood tests may show nothing unusual. You can rule out chronic fatigue syndrome, which is often mistaken for fibromyalgia, if you experience a higher level of body pain and tenderness. Pain from a musculoskeletal injury or a strain tends to be localized and usually improves with rest and, perhaps, anti-inflammatory medications, such as ibuprofen. Fibromyalgia, on the other hand, involves widespread pain and tenderness that doesn't seem to improve over time.

Chronic Inflammation Relief

Original Article @ David Ogdens Blog

Natural Pain and Inflammation Relief

Arthritis, gingivitis, heart disease and psoriasis are conditions that affect very different parts of the body, yet they all have something in common: inflammation. Inflammation also plays a role in dozens of other conditions, from allergies, eczema, bowel disease and autoimmune disorders like lupus to macular degeneration and memory loss.

Inflammation is your immune system's first reaction against infection. The injured area often becomes hot, red, swollen and painful. The heat is produced by the increased blood flow to the injured area. Redness occurs because the battle and repair processes are underway. The area usually becomes swollen because of all the fluid and immune cells at the site. Pain is often the first indicator of inflammation.

Inflammation is an effective way of ensuring that invaders do not enter your body and create havoc, but when it becomes low-grade and chronic, your immune system's army stay revved up and damages healthy issue in the crossfire.

Stress, bacteria, viruses, parasites, environmental toxins, certain foods, smoking, high blood insulin levels and obesity are just a few of the factors that promote inflammation.

Foods you choose can either promote or prevent inflammation. Foods containing arachidonic acid, such as organ meats, beef, dairy products promote inflammation. Through a complicated process the body breaks down arachidonic acid into inflammatory compounds.

Emphasize on eating six servings of vegetables and one serving of fruit everyday. These are foods that have a low rating on glycemic index, meaning the body takes longer to break them down into blood glucose. They are the best choice for reducing inflammation.

Inflammation and Aging

A paper published online in Molecular Cell has reported the results of a study that blocked a certain protein from being expressed in mice. The protein AUF1 is critical for binding and degrading mRNA specific for pro-inflammatory molecules. In this study, the mice lack AUF1, and (not surprisingly) they have a dampened inflammatory response. A bit surprising is the news that, even in a germ-free environment, the mice age very quickly. After further study, authors concluded that the anti-inflammatory AUF1 not only binds and degrades mRNA for pro-inflammatory molecules, but it also acts as a transcription factor responsible for triggering the production of telomerase – a very strange double-role for this type of molecule. Without telomerase, the chromosomes of the mice become degraded very quickly and the mice age prematurely.

Robert Schneider of New York University, who led the study. "This is certainly not something anybody would have ever anticipated."

Schneider and his team had been analysing mice that lacked a protein called AUF1 and they'd shown that it was critical for binding to and degrading mRNA transcripts encoding inflammatory proteins. But besides having a dampened inflammatory response, mice lacking AUF1 displayed some unusual characteristics.

"We noticed that they aged very rapidly," said Schneider. "Every cell in this animal's body was undergoing senescence". Furthermore, "with each subsequent generation the ability to produce mice decreased quite dramatically", he said. These attributes, which appeared to have nothing to do with inflammation, began to ring some bells, said Schneider. They reminded him of reports about mice that lack telomerase—an enzyme that maintains the repetitive DNA sequences (telomeres) that cap and protect the ends of chromosomes. Without telomerase, telomeres become shorter with each cell cycle, which eventually damages the chromosomes and triggers cellular senescence.

Cactus Juice Chronic Inflammation and Pain Relief

Original Article @ David Ogdens Blog

Chronic Inflammation and Pain Relief

A recent CDC report indicated that 90% of Americans rate their health as "good" or better, yet the statistics disagree. They spend more than any other country (>$2 trillion) in healthcare, but rank a dismal 38th in overall health. What if they took even a small percentage of that amount and really focused on prevention? Not only would they be much more healthy, but they would save the country billions in the long run!

I believe they have all the technology they need to be able to focus on prevention, but currently they spend to much attention on disease care versus actual healthcare (prevention) A common definition states that health is simply the absence of disease. While there are much more complex definitions, many people base their health on the absence of certain signs and symptoms related to disease. they now know that the disease process is much more complex and consists of several steps before symptoms begin. Each disease process begins with an insult to a cell or group of cells. After this insult an inflammatory response occurs triggering our body into action. However, often times this inflammation occurs at a level that is unrecognisable or our body does not have the resources it needs to reduce the inflammation. Now that they know inflammation occurs at the beginning of the disease process, the best cure would be to reduce inflammatory markers and prevent inflammation from occurring in the first place.

I recently read an article in Chiropractic Economics that stated the 3 keys to prevention are chiropractic, nutrition, and exercise. I would like to add an addition category: Detoxification.

  1. Chiropractic- Everyone would agree that our brain is important because it tells the rest of our body what to do even when they aren't thinking about it. Getting regular adjustments helps our brain and nervous system function optimally and communicate with our vital organs.
  2. Nutrition- I believe this is the most important aspect of the 3 keys to prevention. Our body is made up of over 70 trillion cells and at any given time those cells are completing thousands of chemical reactions. If they want our brain, nervous system, and other organs to be healthy then they need proper nutrition.
  3. Exercise- Our bodies they're created to move. Without movement there would be death. I believe that our bodies they're created to move in two major ways. The first includes low intensity exercise including walking as primal humans did everyday. The second includes high intensity short duration exercise. Primal humans would occasionally have to lift heavy objects, run from danger, or chase game while hunting. Rarely did they sustain moderate intensity exercise or what they would consider today as cardio.
  4. Detoxification- Today there are over 80,000 different chemicals that man has created. Very few of them have been tested to determine the effect on the body. While the body performs millions of complex chemical reactions each second there is delicate balance that must be maintained. When it is exposed to chemicals that it doesn't recognize (toxins) it needs to be able to remove them to prevent adverse reactions or miscommunication between cells. If too many toxins accumulate our body eventually becomes confused leading to a variety of disease processes.

Pain and Inflammation Relief

Original Article @ David Ogdens Blog

Chronic Inflammation and Knee pain

Knee pain is a common reason for people to seek the care of a Naturopathic Doctor to reduce pain and gain mobility. Knee pain can be a symptom of many other health issues such as arthritis, injury, scaring, cartilage wear, and/or tendon and bursa inflammation. Inflammation is the common sign in each of these conditions, and the cause of knee pain and reduced mobility.

Inflammation, while uncomfortable, is essential to the healing process. Swelling recruits the immune system to the sight of damage, causing us pain and reminding us to take it easy. Chronic inflammation however, is a signal that the body is not healing itself, either due to recurrent injury, or a pro-inflammatory environment that lets inflammation go unchecked. To get total body inflammation under control, a Naturopathic Doctor, will address lifestyle factors which may impact inflammation, and prescribe natural anti-inflammatories to reduce pain and help knee pain sufferers regain function of their joints.

Natural anti-inflammatories have significant advantages over pharmaceutical choices: they cause less digestive side effects, and can be taken long-term without influencing other organs, including the liver. Anti-inflammatory botanicals, such as Curcumin and Boswellia, and nutrients like fish oil, can be prescribed to reduce pain in the joints by calming inflammation at the site. Acupuncture can also decrease pain and inflammation in the knees, which can result in reductions in pain, as well as an improved range of motion. Topical preparations of herbs can also be applied to the joints to reduce inflammation and pain. Naturopathic treatments can also conquer inflammation over time through anti-inflammatory diets, stress reduction techniques, and weight-loss. Chronic inflammation is not only a source of pain, it been linked to other diseases such as heart disease, osteoporosis and cancer. Following an anti-inflammatory protocol can therefore not only decrease joint pain, but also can also reduce the risk of these diseases. Some examples of inflammatory foods to avoid include red meats, nightshade vegetables, (tomato, potato, bell peppers and eggplant) and gluten. Regular use of anti-inflammatory oils such as olive and flax can decrease inflammatory markers in the blood; while culinary herbs such as turmeric and ginger, can turn average meals into anti-inflammatory medicines. Chronic stress can be managed by improving coping strategies and adaptogenic herbs, which can be prescribed by your Naturopathic Doctor.

Whatever the cause of your knee pain, there are natural solutions that can restore your joints to optimal health and help you get moving – pain free.

Chronic Inflammation Relief

Original Article @ David Ogdens Blog

Nopalea Cactus Juice
Chronic Inflammation

Chronic inflammation, also known as low-grade or systemic inflammation — can play a more puzzling and long-lasting role in the body. Consider the vast array of autoimmune disorders — such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and polymyalgia rheumatica — where the body's immune system mistakenly initiates an inflammatory response even though there's no apparent inflammation to fight off. Chronic inflammation plays a more obvious role in diseases such as asthma and the inflammatory bowel diseases ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. And what about the not-so-obvious role of chronic inflammation? Consider the possible connection between gum disease and cardiovascular disease. Research indicates that heart disease, clogged arteries, stroke and bacterial endocarditis may be linked to oral health. Although more study is needed to confirm this possible link, some scientists believe that bacteria from gum disease can enter the bloodstream and make its way to the heart, so you may need to pay more attention to oral health

Even less obvious — but of enormous interest to researchers — is the part inflammation plays in cancer. For instance, chronic bladder inflammation due to repeated urinary infections or cystitis may increase risk of a squamous cell bladder cancer. In some areas of the world, this type of cancer is linked to chronic inflammation caused by infection with a parasite.

Just what does all this mean for you? Can you actually do something to reduce your risk of chronic inflammation that may play a part in disease? That depends. At present, it's still too early in the science to reasonably conclude that reducing inflammation leads to a reduction in cancer risk. Many of the questions concerning cause and effect with cancer have yet to be proven.

What you can do, though, is make a point to avoid certain things that cause inflammation and are proven unhealthy. Prime examples are smoking and excessive alcohol use.

Some people advocate an "anti-inflammatory diet." Although there's less evidence such diets work to directly thwart inflammation, most of the recommended foods are typical of the Mediterranean style of eating and in principle are good choices. Key components of the Mediterranean diet include:

  • Eating generous amounts of fruits and vegetables
  • Consuming healthy fats, such as olive oil and canola oil
  • Eating small portions of nuts
  • For some, drinking red wine in moderation
  • Eating fish on a regular basis
  • Consuming very little red meat

Cactus Juice Chronic Inflammation and Pain Relief

Original Article @ David Ogdens Blog

Nopalea Cactus Juice
Pain and Inflammation relief for Rheumatoid Arthritis

Yesterday I was writing about how sunburn can inflame rheumatoid arthritis (RA), so today I thought I would provide more tips for living with rheumatoid Arthritis.

  • Lighten your load - Every extra pound you carry puts four pounds of stress on your knees, and even a small amount of weight loss will provide relief. Talk to your doctor about the best program for you.

  • Keep mobile - Careful regular and even vigorous exercise is critical for improving flexibility and maintaining muscle to support joints, but opt for low-impact exercises like swimming, biking and yoga that let you work out without painful pounding (and go especially easy during a flare). Avoid lifting heavy weights, which can be hard on tendons around the wrist. You might even consider a few sessions with a personal trainer who has experience with RA patients.

  • Protect your heart - Because RA involves inflammation, it increases your risk of cardiovascular disease. Keep your heart as healthy as possible by maintaining normal blood pressure, avoiding smoking and keeping cholesterol levels under control.

  • Build strong bones - Corticosteroid treatments can increase your odds of developing osteoporosis up to 50 percent. Prevent bone loss by getting 1,000 mg of calcium per day. Supplements are an option, but the best sources of this mineral are milk, yogurt, broccoli, kale and salmon.

  • Deter depression - Living with a chronic pain and inflammation is challenging on many levels. Depression affects approximately 20 percent of people with RA and can actually worsen symptoms. Ask your doctor about treatment options or a referral to a mental-health professional.
  • Get a flu shot - The flu is especially dangerous for anyone who has a chronic illness or an immune system suppressed by drugs. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that people who have autoimmune diseases get an annual flu shot.
  • Soothe pain your way - Some people find a warm pack or bath soothing and pain relieving. Others prefer cold, which decreases blood flow to the inflamed area and eases muscle spasms. You can buy hot and cold packs from a drugstore, or use a hot water bottle or a pack of frozen vegetables.

Inflammation and sunburn

One thing I have learn from living in the tropics is to take care to avoid sunburn, although I do occasionally get caught out.

Sunburns are the worst thing ever. But they are even more painful for those with a chronic inflammatory disease like rheumatoid arthritis. A sunburn is an acute inflammatory reaction of the skin that follows excessive exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) from the sun. So basically, if your skin gets burnt it sends a trigger to you immune system (often being suppressed by a biologic medication) to hurry up and heal the burnt area.

But that's the last thing you want to happen — because it can send your body into a full flare-up mode. you could feel like a big puff ball, as your body responds to the inflammation started by sunburn.

With rheumatoid arthritis(RA), your immune system — which usually does a great job fighting germs that want to cause infections — turns its powerful attack on your body. Certain chemicals cause severe inflammation in your joints, which then causes the pain and swelling that comes along with the disease. But according to research, we should not only be worried about the inflammation in our joints that can cause joint damage, because the inflammation runs throughout our entire body with a flare-up. Eventually, it can cause inflammation in your heart. That's why it is important to try to suppress the inflammation caused by RA. .

Inflammation and Toxins

Reduce Inflammation Naturally

Why do we get disease? Is it just a matter of time before each and every one of us develop some type of chronic disease? There are two major culprits when it comes to disease today: toxins and inflammation. Your body has several complex pathways to help it deal with toxins and limit the amount of inflammation. However, in today's society we are exposed to hundreds if not thousands of different toxins each day. They are in our food, personal care products, electronics, cleaning chemicals, and the list goes on. We are exposed to so many toxic insults that if the body is not adequately prepared, it loses the ability to deal with this exposure and it begins to accumulate toxins.

If your brain stopped sending signals to your stomach, what would happen? Well you wouldn't be able to digest food, produce stomach acid and enzymes, and eventually it would begin to die. Toxins can have a similar effect on each individual cell in our body. They prevent our cells from communicating with each other, producing essential chemicals, and eliminating was products. When our cells quit communicating properly our body becomes confused or perhaps those cells belong to a specific organ such as the pancreas and soon you get diagnosed with diabetes or pancreatic cancer.

As this process occurs and toxins accumulate our body essentially has two options: die or give us a disease. Which option would you choose? Personally I choose neither. Instead, I have chosen to address this issue, avoid unnecessary toxins, and limit the amount of inflammation in my body so that it can communicate and remain healthy.

New research has shown for the first time that omega-3 in fish oil (DHA/EPA) could substantially and significantly reduce the signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis.

"There was strong evidence that omega-3 influences the biochemistry of the disease, and therefore not only helps prevent disease, but also slows its progression, potentially controlling established osteoarthritis,"
said lead researcher Dr John Tarlton.

The research was conducted in a strain of guinea pigs that naturally develop osteoarthritis and compared to controls. Fish oil intake reduced the pathology of tissue damage associated with osteoarthritis towards those without the problem. Medical research director of Arthritis Research UK, Professor Alan Silman, said:

"The possibility that omega-3 fatty acids could prevent osteoarthritis from developing has been a tantalising one. Some limited, previous research in dogs has suggested that we were a long way away from understanding the potential use in humans. However, this current research in guinea pigs is exciting as it brings us closer to understanding how omega-3 might fundamentally interfere with the osteoarthritis process, and that it could potentially be taken as a treatment."

The ability to recover from inflammation is required to keep up with wear and tear and prevent for every body structure. This study shows just how important these nutrients are to long term joint health.

Reduce Inflammation Naturally

Inflammations role in major diseases went undetected for a long time. But now, chronic inflammation is being blamed for a number of well-known illnesses, such as arthritis, Alzheimer's, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, depression and even cancer. But what is the connection between inflammation and these seemingly unrelated illnesses?

In truth, inflammation is not always bad. Our bodies use this natural reaction to help fight germs and heal wounds. In most cases, inflammation takes care of an injury and then recedes. However, problems arise when inflammation stays in the "on" mode.

For years we have known that inflammation plays a role in rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, certain bowel diseases and the like. But over the last decade, medical leaders have found the impact of persistent inflammation on the body to be much more widespread. This has changed the way we look at how heart attacks, strokes and diabetes are caused. It also provides new opportunities for predicting, preventing, and even treating diseases.

There are a number of factors that trigger chronic inflammation. Thankfully, many of them can be reduced through some simple lifestyle changes.

  • Fat – Once thought to be storage units for energy, we now understand that fat cells pump out cytokines that fan the inflammatory process. Because of this reaction, excess fat – specifically belly fat – is now thought to be the link between obesity and Type 2 diabetes.

  • High-fat, High-calorie meals – This can often be avoided by laying off fast food and other unhealthy meals.

  • Emotional Stress – In response to stress, the body produces hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline, which lead to inflammation.
While anti-inflammatory medications are available and often helpful, they each come with their own set of risks and side effects. So how can we reduce inflammation naturally? The answer may seem like a typical list of remedies, and while they do require a certain level of willpower, they are productive in affecting change for the better.

Diet – Anti-inflammatory foods include colourful fruits and vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, kale and cauliflower. Also needed are healthy fats which we can access through legumes, nuts, olive oil and fish. Avoid processed foods, junk foods, and Trans fats.

Activity – After exercise the body generates more free radicals. In response, it then makes and uses more antioxidants, which ultimately work to reduce inflammation. Losing weight also provides the added benefit of fat loss.

Stress Management – The hormones that result from stress contribute to the burning sensation associated with inflammation and also contribute to belly fat. Try to take part in stress-reducing activities on a regular basis (e.g. recreation, reading, deep breathing). Getting adequate sleep will also go a long way in reducing stress.

Reduce Arthritis Inflammation Naturally

Arthritis is a very painful condition in which one or more of a person's joints are inflamed. This campaign is to educate people on facts and prevention of the condition.

Affecting more than 50 million Americans, arthritis is the leading cause of disability in the United States. The condition is used to describe more than 100 diseases which affect a person's joints, the area where two bones meet.

Arthritis is the result of a breakdown of cartilage. Joints are typically protected by cartilage, which allow them to move easily. Without an efficient amount of cartilage, the bones rub together causing severe discomfort, swelling, and stiffness.

There are two major types of arthritis. The first is Osteoarthritis, where the joint cartilage breaks down and causes pain and stiffness. The second type, Rheumatoid arthritis, is more severe and is a condition in which the body's immune system attacks the membrane surrounding the joints, and can lead to joint destruction.

There are many different causes of arthritis; however, there are no known cures for it. The Arthritis Foundation is a non-profit organization working towards finding a cure through education and research.

Although there are no known cures, there are many types of treatment to help reduce pain, improve joint function, and prevent further damage. The types of treatment include exercise programs, such as muscle toning and aerobic activity. Along with this, physical therapy may be recommended. Heating or icing the area, support joints or splints, and massages are proven to help reduce inflammation and pain. This month is Arthritis Awareness Month in the USA, so make sure you get plenty of sleep each night, at least 8 to 10 hours. You should also stay active, make sure you include plenty of fruits and vegetables in your diet, and participate in stress-reducing activities such as yoga, massage or meditation.

Reduce Inflammation Naturally

though inflammation medications are widely available, they each come with their own set of risks and potential side effects. so how can we help reduce inflammation naturally? the answer is simple though implementing it can take willpower and determination : lifestyle changes.

thought they might sound a familiar litany of "remedies", a balanced nutritious diet, exercise and stress reduction can go a long way to reducing inflammation in the body.

  • Anti-inflammatory diet - just as certain chemicals are pro- or anti-inflammatory so too are certain foods you need to load up on anti-inflammatory foods like colourful fruits and vegetables, particularly cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, kale and cauliflower. research gas shown that compounds in these vegetables reduce the production of inflammatory cytokines.

Also include legumes, nuts, healthy fats such as olive oil, and fish in your diet. the Omega-3 fatty acids in cold water fish such as salmon, mackerel and sardines provide the building blocks it needs to make anti-inflammatory hormones. whole grains should also be a staple in your diet: a study of overweight people found that those that ate whole grains versus refined grains such as white bread, pasta and rice, reduced their blood counts of C-Reactive protein (a marker for inflammation by 30%

Spices such as curry and ginger have anti-inflammatory properties as do green ,white and oolong varieties of tea. avoid processed and junk foods, saturated fats and Trans fat all of which can be pro-inflammatory.

  • Activity - the benefits of exercise have been well documented and now include reducing inflammation. After you exercise your body creates more free radicals. then your body makes and uses more anti-oxidants which ultimately work to reduce inflammation. Plus fat cells are inflammation-making -machines, so losing weight an reduce this source of inflammation.

Try to get at least 30 minutes of exercise most days of the week, however do not over do it as exercise regimes of more than 30 minutes can be pro-inflammatory.

  • Stresses Management - Stress hormones contribute to the "fire" of inflammation and can increase your belly fat (see yesterdays post). Practice stress reduction techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, yoga and massage to bring the stress under control. Exercise is in fact a great stress buster. also be sure to get plenty of sleep each night as lack of sleep can stress the body.

Inflammation

Researchers at the David Geffen School of medicine at UCLA have discovered that negative and competitive social interactions increased pro-inflammatory proteins in the body.

The study of 122 healthy young adults who kept a journal of all positive, negative and competitive social interactions for eight days. the participants were then brought in for stressful 25 minute tests, where they did maths problems in their heads and gave speeches in front of strangers. Scientists took check swabs samples before the test , and 25 and 80 minutes after the test. they found that those with negative interactions during the week had high inflammatory protein levels both before and after the stressful mental test.

Interestingly, the negative interactions produced a different pro-inflammatory protein than competitive interactions.

Chronic Inflammation Relief

Controlling pain and inflammation

Once considered a "secret" killer because its role in major disease went undetected, persistent inflammation is increasingly being blamed for a host of illnesses, including arthritis, Alzheimer's, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, depression and even cancer.

Not all inflammation is bad, however. We need inflammation to help fight germs and heal wounds. Most times, inflammation takes care of an injury and recedes. But when inflammation gets stuck in the "on" mode, trouble can follow.

Medical leaders have known for years that inflammation naturally plays a key role in inflammatory ills like rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, multiple sclerosis and inflammatory bowel diseases. But over the past decade or so, they've found that impact of chronic inflammation on the body is widespread.

As evidence builds about the role of inflammation in other, seemingly unrelated diseases, Harvard Cardiologist Paul Ridker, M.D., Ph.D., calls the development

"a fundamental revolution in how we understand what causes heart attacks, strokes and diabetes."
He also says it opens up new ways to predict, prevent and even treat diseases.

So what can cause this killer inflammation – and more importantly, how can we stop or reduce it?

Chronic inflammation has many triggers; luckily, we can modify our lifestyles to reduce and even eliminate some of them.

Fat – No one likes to see it in the mirror, but it's more than a cosmetic problem. Once suspected to be storage units of energy, fat cells are now known to churn out proteins called cytokines which fan the inflammatory process. Excess belly fat in particular can be a huge source of inflammation.

Experts believe this may explain the link between obesity and Type 2 diabetes. Obesity produces inflammation, and inflammation promotes insulin resistance, a hallmark of diabetes and metabolic syndrome (a group of symptoms which can increase the risk of diabetes, heart disease and stroke).

High-fat and high-calorie meals – Fast food and other unhealthy fare can be triggers for inflammation. Researchers from the University at Buffalo, State University of New York found that after a 900-calorie fast-food breakfast, study participants showed high blood levels of inflammation for the next four hours.

Emotional stress – Hormones produced as part of the stress response – such as cortisol and adrenaline – can lead to inflammation. Plus, cortisol can lead to belly fat, which produces inflammation of its own.

Though anti-inflammatory medications are widely available, they each come with their own set of risks and potential side effects. So how can we help reduce inflammation naturally? The answer is simple, though implementing it can take willpower and determination: lifestyle changes.

Controlling pain and inflammation

More than 90 percent of people with lupus will experience joint and/or muscle pain that can be disabling. Lupus causes inflammation in the synovial tissues inside joints of fingers, wrists, feet, ankles and knees. As a result of this inflammation, non-erosive arthritis can develop that causes pain, stiffness and swollen joints. Decades before my lupus was diagnosed, arthritis was one of the first symptoms of my lupus that appeared as early as my kindergarten years, and recurred all through high school, college and early adult life.

Medications, both over-the-counter and prescription drugs, are used to used to control the pain and inflammation associated with lupus. Medications for inflammation include non-narcotic analgesics/anti-inflammatory medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen, naprosyn, sulindac, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Pain medications range from simple aspirin or acetaminophen to strong narcotics used for the most severe lupus pain. Persistent or severe inflammation at times requires the use of steroid medications to reduce swelling in involved joint tissues.

The Lupus Foundation of America provides the following information on NSAID medications used to treat painful inflammation.

Pain and inflammation are common in people with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Sometimes these symptoms indicate serious organ involvement which may require powerful anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive drugs, such as steroids (cortisone, prednisone).

At other times the inflammation is not as severe or does not affect major organs, and a less potent drug is indicated. In these cases, other milder anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs can be used, especially a group of drugs called the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

While NSAIDs are not approved specifically for SLE by the Food and Drug Administration, they are approved for use in many musculoskeletal pain conditions such as arthritis and tendinitis, which also afflict people with lupus.

Other approaches to dealing with pain may include various therapies such as applying heat, gentle exercise to stimulate pain-relieving nature endorphins, prayer, meditation, bio-feedback and other non-chemical alternative approaches to pain management.

Inflammation -Arthritis

Original Article @ David Ogdens Blog

Controlling pain and inflammation

You don't want to go windsurfing or mountain biking anymore. All you want to do is wake up and be able to walk from your bed to the rest room without feeling like you can't move. Yet, suddenly you wake up feeling crippled and sore all over. Even your fingers hurt. You think it's temporary, but it gets worse each morning. It lingers throughout the day. You wonder if it's arthritis or osteoporosis.

If you ache all over, chances are it's Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). Your feet, ankles, calves, knees, legs, back, neck, hands, arms, shoulders, wrists…all your joints hurts. The pain is equally distributed on both sides of your body. You start moving really slowly.

You tell yourself you are too young for this. RA can hit when you're 30 or any time later. It can affect men and women. But there are 2 1/2 times more women suffering from it. It's a long-term disease that leads to inflammation of the joints and surrounding tissues. It can also affect other organs.

Turns out, even a 5% weight gain could trigger it in someone who never had it. Inflammation. Now, they're saying with obesity on the rise –more & more people will get it. And they say the cause is unknown. I'm thinking if even a slight weight gain triggers it, that's a clue. Some food or something in a certain food can be triggering it. Try the process of elimination to try to figure that out. One more thing…I say look at the 4 E's first whenever your health is off-balance.

  1. Emotions: Eckhart Tolle, the author of "The Power of Now" says anger affects your physical health when you repeatedly think about something that happened in the past or you worry about the future.
He says those thoughts cause negative emotions, which cause physical pain. It's the reason depression hurts or bullying. Negative words hurt. Literally. Negative thoughts hurt. Literally.
Tolle says anger is contagious. No one should be walking around angry.
Take the time to release it. You benefit. Everyone around you benefits.
Think of a record. If it has scratches, it skips. If it skips, you don't keep listening to it. If you did, it would severely damage the record (physical pain). The record is your mind. Change it.
Meditate on the present moment. Empty your mind of all thoughts. It's hard to do. Keep trying. Go to a quiet place. Close your eyes. Visualize releasing mental, emotional and physical pain. Focus on soft music, rain drops or simply your breathing.

  2. Environment – You may not be able to change your environment, which is why eliminating anger is so important. If you have to stay in an existing negative environment, go to a different room, step outside or go for a walk in nature. Turning off the computer and all electronic equipment helps too.

  3. Exercise – The best exercise for RA is stretching slowly first thing in the morning, walking, yoga and swimming.

  4. Eating - Can some fats increase inflammation in Rheumatoid Arthritis? (from WebMD)
Yes. Studies show that saturated fats may increase inflammation in the body. Foods high in saturated fats, such as animal products like bacon, steak, butter, and cream, may increase inflammatory chemicals in the body called prostaglandins.
Prostaglandins are chemicals that cause inflammation, pain, swelling, and joint destruction in rheumatoid arthritis.
In addition, some findings confirm that meat contains high amounts of arachidonic acid. Arachidonic acid is a fatty acid that's converted to inflammatory prostaglandins in the body.
Some people with rheumatoid arthritis find that a vegetarian diet helps relieve symptoms of pain and stiffness. Other people with rheumatoid arthritis, however, get no benefit from eating a diet that eliminates meat.

Controlling pain and inflammation

Scientists believe that the key to extending lifespan and late-life well-being lies in figuring out how to manipulate and cut off chronic inflammation. While diseases such as those listed below manifest themselves in the body in very different ways, they seem to share many commonalities down at the cellular level.

Most people have heard of so-called autoimmune diseases, when the body turns on itself with a hyperactive defence mechanism. Common examples include hay fever, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, pelvic inflammatory disease, colitis, and bursitis.

You can add to this list cancer, Alzheimer's disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, Parkinson's, osteoporosis, and even depression. Many researchers also now believe that inflammation isn't just a result of osteoarthritis; it may be a contributing cause."The one thing that unifies most major diseases is inflammation," says the Arizona Centre on Aging's Nikolich-Zugich."Whether inflammation is the root cause or whether these diseases are made worse by the inflammatory process isn't entirely clear yet — but inflammation is almost always a factor."

Because our bodies are exposed to more damage at the cell level than they can handle — a process called oxidative stress — shoring up defences is key. And there's no easier way to do that than by carefully choosing what we eat and drink.

Controlling stress and inflammation

Sometimes, we can be overwhelmed by the various types of stress that come with everyday life. These include mental stress, such as over-work; physical stress, such as exercising more than usual; emotional stress, as when we're having relationship problems, and environmental stress from pollutants in our environment and food supply.

Today let's look at just one type of stress — emotional — to see how the brain and body respond. Suppose you get a letter from the government tax office saying you owe 40,000. Even if you have that kind of cash lying around, you're going to feel stressed. Your brain will release chemicals called catecholamines that trigger inflammatory processes. One might be the release of insulin, a pro-inflammatory hormone.

Too much stress over an extended time period will cause insulin resistance, which is associated with obesity. That obesity (which itself creates inflammation) triggers the body to produce another pro-inflammatory hormone called cortisol, which creates more stress, and so on and so on. Clearly, then, controlling stress will help break this cycle of inflammation, and help the body return to its natural, balanced state.

Keys to stress management
The first step toward managing stress is to identify the things in your life that are causing it: marital problems, work pressures or illness in the family. Once you identify and understand these stressors, you can begin to find ways to change your environment and manage them. Support groups, exercise and certain nutritional supplements may help modify the levels of stress hormones and help the mind and body to re-balance.

Cactus Juice Chronic Inflammation and Pain Relief

Pain and Inflammation Relief

In its beginning stages, inflammation is the body's healing response to an injury, irritation, or microbial invasion. For instance, if you catch a cold, your body creates inflammation in the form of a runny nose, sore throat, and cough. As annoying as these symptoms are, they are signs of a healthy body healing itself.

However, when the inflammation we can't see — inside our bodies — becomes chronic, it ultimately causes degeneration of our tissues and leads to disease. Simply put, it ages us. Chronic inflammation is thought to be the root of many diseases, including heart disease, obesity, Alzheimer's and other dementia, Parkinson's, osteoarthritis, diabetes, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, and more.

You can see why naturopathic doctors focus so much attention on the treatment and prevention of chronic inflammation. There are some simple suggestions to help reduce inflammation in the body. Together, these suggestions build a true foundation of health. And if you're thinking,"I'm too old for all of these changes," perish the thought. You're never too old to improve the quality of your life. Try picking and changing the food you eat.

Eat plenty of healthy, anti-inflammatory foods, such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, fish (good for omega-3 fatty acids), nuts, and legumes. Anti-inflammation diet books are available and can be a great resource for grocery shopping and recipes. Jessica Black's The Anti-Inflammation Diet and Recipe Book is one.

Avoid inflammatory foods, such as processed foods, sugar, high fructose corn syrup, trans- and hydrogenated fats, alcohol, and caffeine.

Cut out the foods that don't work for you.

Try an elimination diet to check for food allergies or sensitivities. This is a great step, because many people have this problem and don't even know it. Food allergies and sensitivities can lead to a host of physical problems. Start by avoiding the following foods for one month: wheat products, dairy products, soy, tomatoes, potatoes, corn, peanuts, peanut butter, citrus fruits, pork, and shellfish.

What's left to eat? Plenty. Explore your grocery store. When the month is up, add these foods back into your diet one at a time. Wait three days between foods and see how you feel. If a food is aggravating your body, you should eat it in moderation or avoid it altogether.

Eat anti-inflammatory spices such as turmeric, garlic, and ginger. These herbs have been used as medicines for thousands of years — and they taste good, too.

Do you have Arthritis

Original Article @ David Ogdens Blog

Nopalea Cactus Juice
Pain and Inflammation Relief

Arthritis Pain
Continuing on from yesterdays article, here seven warning signs of arthritis, and don't think for a minute that you arthritis is just for the old. Half of those who get it are under age 65. One in five adults — 50 million Americans — has been diagnosed with arthritis. Most wait to see a doctor until pain interferes with daily life — but pain isn't the only sign of trouble.

"Early is better with arthritis diagnosis," says Arthritis Foundation Vice President Patience White, a professor of medicine and pediatrics at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Washington, D.C. Treating the autoimmune disease rheumatoid arthritis (RA) within the first months of onset, for example, can minimize joint deformities and even put the disease into remission, thanks to the latest treatments. With osteoarthritis (OA), a degenerative joint disease that's the most common kind of arthritis, the sooner you start behavioural changes, the better you may be able to manage pain and preserve mobility, White says. Here's what to watch for.

  • Do you find that you are unable to move around easily for the first half an hour on waking up?
Everybody has some morning stiffness, but normally it fades as you stretch and start moving. "With rheumatoid arthritis, it can take 30 minutes or more to loosen up — sometimes hours, or even all day," says Chaim Putterman, chief of rheumatology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Centre in New York City. "People affected say they feel encased, like prisoners, and the feeing of being unable to move can be even more burdensome than the actual pain."

  • Do your Your knee joint lock or send stabs of pain when you bend it, as when going up or down stairs. Added red flag: Knee pain if you're overweight."Every extra pound you gain feels like four pounds across your knees,"White says. Excess weight raises your risk of developing arthritis, which some 60 percent of obese people develop.

Related types of painful physical function include limping, being unable to extend your elbow, changes in how steadily you can stand or walk, and trouble standing on tiptoe. \

  • Chronic tiredness, loss of appetite, weight loss, anaemia, and/or fever that persists for weeks (longer than a bout of flu). Some combination of these symptoms usually appears, along with stiffness and pain. You might even notice changes in nonjoint tissue, such as eyes that feel dry and sore and may be red. These symptoms can come on gradually or suddenly.

Why pay attention: Having these mild, flu-like, across-the-body symptoms, along with stiffness and pain, points to rheumatoid arthritis. RA is a disorder of systemic inflammation, meaning the entire body is affected (as opposed to the problem being isolated in a particular joint)"You shouldn't just take two Tylenol and sleep the discomfort off," Putterman says. These symptoms warrant a physical exam soon.

  • Do You have a joint that suddenly hurts like crazy — many sufferers give it a ten on a pain scale of one to ten, likening the pain to kidney stones, White says. The joint is likely also red, hot to the touch, and tender. Although this pattern can happen to other joints, the big toe is the most common site. Usually only one joint is affected at a time.

Why pay attention: Sudden, excruciating pain, especially in the large toe, is likely an attack of gout, the second-most common form of arthritis and the most common type of inflammatory arthritis. Gout occurs when uric acid, a natural waste product that circulates in the blood, builds up in body tissue as needle-shaped crystals. This happens either because the body produces too much uric acid or doesn't dispose of it well through the urine.

  • Look for Bony spurs (small enlargements) on the joint of fingers. One may appear on the last joint, where it's known as a Heberden's node, or on the middle joint, where it's called a Bouchard's node. Sometimes the knobby bump appears at the base of the thumb (though this bump wasn't named after the doctor who studied it).

The joint is probably also stiff to move, although not necessarily painful. To the touch, the bump feels more like a bone than like a sponge. Some toes can also be affected.

Why pay attention: Doctors use this visual information to help diagnose arthritis, along with the rest of a physical exam, a history, and, sometimes, X-rays and lab tests. Heberden's nodes and Bouchard's nodes, seen in osteoarthritis, tend to run in families, especially through women, White says. Farmers and others who engage in a lot of manual labour are especially prone to OA of the lower extremities.

  • Does pain stop you falling asleep, or do you wake up during the night with joint pain . Some sufferers begin to avoid family and other activities they enjoy because they feel ground down by chronic pain; the very prospect of visiting grandchildren or going to a social outing feels overwhelming.

Osteoarthritis pain is caused by eroding cartilage, which eventually causes bone to rub against bone — and yes, it can really hurt. Everyone has a different threshold for pain. But pain that interferes with your ability to enjoy the most basic, restful activities of life like sleep or enjoying your family? That's a different animal."It shows that what you've been doing before is not adequate and that the pain should be taken care of," Putterman says.

  • Achy, hard-to-use hands
Trouble managing fine-motor skills: buttoning a shirt, tying shoelaces, using a fork and knife, turning a key in a lock, grasping a doorknob, snapping fingers. Affected joints can be redder than surrounding skin, warm to the touch, and tender.

Why pay attention: "Trouble with these activities of daily living all suggest something worrisome is going on," Putterman says. Many different joints in the hands and wrists tend to be involved with rheumatoid arthritis, making these hand and finger tasks so frustrating. Rheumatoid arthritis is also a symmetrical disease, meaning both sides of the body (and hands as well as feet) tend to be affected simultaneously. (In osteoarthritis, the joints affected usually aren't symmetrical.)

Notice which part of the hand is affected. Rheumatoid arthritis tends to afflict the knuckles and the next joint up, White says. In osteoarthritis, the top joints and the base of the thumb are more affected, and not necessarily all of the digits at once.

Chronic Inflammation Relief

Pain and Inflammation Relief

Arthritis Pain
Arthritis literally means joint (arthro-) inflammation (-itis). Indeed, there is often inflammation around a diseased joint. But, did you know that arthritis is a disease of dehydration? Yes; long before the joints swell and inflame, the water-rich lining of the joint begins to dry out. That's why most doctors have changed the diagnosis to Degenerative Joint Disease. To effectively care for degenerating joints we need to find a way to get fluid – especially water – back into its proper place.

Have you ever put two "north pole" magnets together? Notice how they repel each other? A similar phenomenon occurs in your joints. Thousands of positively charged proteins called GAGs push each other apart and create a vacuum in your joint space. But nature doesn't like a vacuum. So your body will fill this space with a nutrient-rich soup made of minerals, fats and water. In degenerative joint disease, GAGs are lost and the vacuum collapses. No water gets in and your joints dry out and become inflamed.

Inflammation occurs when a special cell in your joint bursts and releases acids and histamines. This cell is called a mast cell. When a mast cell is damaged by trauma or toxins, or is weakened by nutrient deficiency or other stress, it pops like a water balloon and its contents flood out to neighbouring cells.

Even healthy cells cannot resist this flood of chemicals and they will join in spreading inflammation. Within a short time, all of the joints in a region can become inflamed with arthritis because of dehydration in one joint. Mast cells also exist in your skin. So the area around a diseased joint will become red and warm to the touch.

The solution to this immediate problem is really quite simple.

  • Replace the nutrients found in the "soup" of your joints – The most important nutrients to put into your joints are mineral protein complexes. Glucosamine, chondroitin and methyl-sulfonyl methane (MSM) are three good representatives of this family of protein-mineral complexes. Also, basic minerals like magnesium and boron are very important to joint health. These nutrients are pumped in and out of your joints by movement. So, keeping your joints mobile and active is critical.
  • Stabilize the mast cell so it doesn't pop – Mast cells are surrounded by healthy fats. Dietary fats from certain fish and nuts can help reduce inflammation. Also, supplemental fats like Perilla seed oil, fish oil and cetyl myristoleate (CMO) create healthy, robust mast cells.
  • Clean out any debris left over from the inflammation – Finally, you must clean out all of the fractured proteins to prevent more cell damage in the future. These proteins are like broken glass inside your joints. The enzyme Bromelain is very effective at reducing these fractured proteins and inflammation.
The results
Numerous studies from such renowned researchers as Navarro, Ressel and Bucci have all demonstrated that joints can be re-hydrated by following these recommendations. Just imagine what this means: we may not have found a cure for the common cold but we have found a way to help repair the most common crippling degeneration we face in North America.

Pain
Pain is the way your body signals that there is something wrong requiring immediate attention – withdraw from the pain Switches – like light switches that turn on a light – turn on the pain signal when danger exists and turn it off when danger has passed. So, the first remedy for chronic pain is to withdraw from whatever is causing the pain.

With chronic pain, sometimes the switch gets turned on and never gets turned off These switches, often called pain gates, are ruled by nutrients such as Vitamin D. Also, in chronic nerve pain, a signal is sent from a damaged area or lesion in the myelin sheath. The myelin sheath is ruled by nutrients such as Vitamin B-12 and folate as well as essential fatty acids.

Chronic muscle pain occurs when muscles try to restore balance to an unbalanced muscle region. The imbalance may be caused by injury, stress, a sedentary lifestyle or poor posture (really, poor posture and sedentary living are types of muscle injury). Muscle balance is ruled by magnesium and, to a smaller extent, by potassium and calcium.

Inflammation
Just as chronic nerve pain can become caught in a loop or cycle, inflammation may become chronic even after the cause of the inflammation is removed. The chemicals of inflammation injure your afferent nerves and your brain interprets this injury as chronic pain. Pain and inflammation go hand in hand.

To break the cycle of chronic pain we must:

  • Remove the cause: trauma/injury, toxins, etc.
  • Restore nutrient balance
  • Break the cycle of inflammation
In this way we can learn to listen to the message of pain and achieve the balance of pain-free living!

Researchers at California's Cedars-Sinai medical centre have unlocked the mystery of how an inflammatory molecule is produced in the body, a discovery they say could lead to advances in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, Type 2 diabetes and numerous other chronic diseases that affect tens of millions of people.

The study, funded by the National Institutes of Health, is published online by the peer-reviewed journal Immunity and appeared in the March print edition.

The researchers identified for the first time the mechanism that leads to the production of the molecule interleukin-1beta. It is a major contributor to inflammation, which lies at the root of many serious health conditions, including atherosclerotic heart disease and some types of strokes.

Current drug therapies seek to block this molecule's action after it is secreted by cells. However, the new research could lead to the development of treatments that would prevent the body from producing it, resulting in more effective medications and therapies for inflammatory diseases.

"If we understand how this molecule is made in the body, we may be able to block it before it is produced,"
Said study author Dr. Moshe Arditi, executive vice chair of research in the Department of Pediatrics and director of the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Immunology.
"Until now, this was the missing piece of the puzzle."
Arditi, who also directs Cedars-Sinai's Infectious and Immunologic Diseases Research Centre, found that damaged mitochondrial DNA activate specific proteins within dying cells, triggering the release of interleukin-1beta. Previous research has shown the molecule, when over-secreted by cells, can be a significant contributor to major inflammatory diseases.

Three of these diseases alone — atherosclerosis, Type 2 diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis – affect an estimated 100 million Americans.

Arditi is planning further studies to build on the findings.

"The discovery by Arditi and colleagues has great potential to impact a wide range of inflammatory diseases, particularly in their early stages where an intervention could prevent more severe and debilitating ravages of such diseases,"
Said Dr. Leon Fine, Cedars-Sinai's vice dean of research and chair of biomedical sciences.
"This discovery, at last, may open the door to such therapy."
