What Is Diabetes

Original Article @ David Ogdens Blog

Diabetes Diabetes comes in two types:

Type 1 Diabetes – occurs when your immune system attacks the insulin producing part of your pancreas. It kills these cells and you can no longer produce insulin. The function of insulin is to take the glucose (blood sugar) from the bloodstream into the muscles and other cells where it can be burned to produce energy. When you don't have enough insulin, the glucose from your diet accumulates in your bloodstream. Glucose becomes toxic very quickly. Within a short time, this blood sugar overload can damage your eyes, brain, lungs and kidneys.

Type 2 Diabetes – occurs when the pancreas functions just fine, but the cells in your muscles and the rest of your body become resistant to insulin. The insulin cannot signal the cells to open up and receive the glucose. Just as in Type 1 Diabetes, glucose (blood sugar) increases to dangerous levels. The fuel cannot be burned to create energy, so you feel tired. As the glucose level climbs in the bloodstream it can destroy your eyes, brain, lungs and kidneys.

Type 1 diabetes is characterized by low insulin and high glucose. Type 2 Diabetes is characterized by high insulin and high glucose. This extra high insulin hormone is very inflammatory. It can destroy your blood vessels, disrupt your entire family of hormones and make you fat.

Controlling diabetes

The key to controlling the damage from Type 1 Diabetes is to control your carbohydrate levels. Determine how many carbs you have eaten and adjust your supplemental insulin levels to match. Carbohydrates in Nopalea are listed on the Supplemental Facts Panel.

The key to controlling Type 2 Diabetes is to limit the number of carbohydrates per day: 1 gram of carbohydrate per pound of body weight daily. (Healthy people will often eat 2 grams of carbohydrate per pound of body weight daily.) Determine how many grams of carbohydrate you need and plan a diet to match. Include your servings of Nopalea in the final carb count.

In order to lose body fat, it is often necessary to employ a low-carb diet. Limiting carbohydrates to 60 grams or less will often result in reducing blood sugar and increasing insulin sensitivity. Reducing stress, increasing exercise and increasing dietary fiber help with insulin resistance as well.

Type 2 diabetes is at epidemic proportions in developed lands around the world. We all need to increase our activity, dietary fiber, good fats and lean proteins as well as reduce stress to improve our health. Once we lose our health it is difficult to get back. Guard it jealously.

You've probably heard the expression, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." This means that taking small actions now is better than doing nothing and then having to deal with a big problem later. This is especially important when it comes to your health because health disorders can be extraordinarily difficult to resolve.

According to the National Center for Health Statistics, the most common causes of death in North America are:

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Cancer
  • Respiratory disease
  • Accidents
  • Diabetes
The most common reasons why people lose their vitality and eventually their lives, according to the Journal of the American Medical Association, include:
  • Tobacco
  • Poor diet
  • Physical inactivity
  • Alcohol
  • Infections
  • Toxins

From this you can see that tobacco, poor diet, physical inactivity as well as alcohol abuse can lead to disability and death from heart attack, cancer and lung diseases.

Your family history can teach you much about your risk factors for disability and disease. You should pay special attention to closest relatives: your parents, siblings, children and grandparents.

  • How long did they live?
  • What were their health challenges?
  • How can I help avoid similar challenges?
What is your family history telling you? What nutrient strategies can you use to help reduce the likelihood of disease and disability? By assessing your health risks as an individual you can create a program to help you reduce these risks.

Most of us know we need to care for our basic physical, emotional and spiritual needs and to look at our family histories for disease risk. So, coming up with the right health recommendations from these actions is usually not too big a problem.

Use healthy foundation nutrients every day

  • Find your sense of purpose
  • Determine what you need in terms of:
    Physical, emotional,spiritual and Financial resources
  • Develop a strategy based on:
Passion, mission, desire and purpose — not fear!

Do you ever consider how much that little bottle of pills costs you? Or your insurance company?

You go to a doctor and pay around $175 for a 10-minute consult. He writes a prescription. You go to the pharmacy and wait while it is filled, pay between $3.50 and $550 (sometimes there is a difference between the two), go home and take the medicine for a week or two. If you have problems along the way, you return to the doctor for another $150 appointment so he can refer you to a specialist who now charges $275 and writes another prescription…

In many areas, you often do not even see a doctor. "Physician's Assistants" do that. It still costs $175, but it only takes a few extra years of school. They write the prescriptions.

This is not unusual at all. If the doctor's office is private, he might have a nurse, a receptionist, a clerk and a bookkeeper. If you visit an office with several physicians you will see people everywhere, and few of them have anything to do with medicine. The primary role of these sundry people is government compliance.

You also face the prospect of being sent to the hospital or clinic for "special tests." You might visit a doctor because of a stomach complaint, and he might want you to have blood drawn, get an ultra-sound, a barium test, and leave a gallon of urine for a twenty-four hour creatinine clearance. If you refuse, he will write a prescription for antacid. If the pain does not gone away after a week, it might then appropriate to get the tests.

Another problem is pain medicine, any kind of hormone (including human type insulin) and anti-biotics. Because it is so closely controlled, chronic pain requires chronic payment to get the ""good stuff." You have to poke your head in every month (at a cost of $250 or so) so the PA can hand you the same prescription you were handed last month. The only option is aspirin or ibuprofen.

Yes, you might need the stuff every month for the rest of your life, but the doctor has to assure the government that you have paid for the right to get it. It's called "sanctioned health care." It means expensive. It also means controlled.

The only alternative is to find a a non prescription pain and inflammation resource.

Osteoarthritis Pain and Inflammation Relief

A review article from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver shows that exercise does not increase the rate of knee damage in people with osteoarthritis, and usually reduces knee pain and disability (Canadian Family Physician, September 2009).

If you develop pain in your knee that was not caused by an accident or trauma, your doctor will usually check you for known causes of joint damage. If he finds no cause, he will tell you that you have osteoarthritis, which means that he doesn't know why your knee hurts. Most people with osteoarthritis (not associated with trauma) are overweight, do not exercise, and/or have weak muscles that support knee movements.

Osteoarthritis causes a higher incidence of disability than any other chronic condition It affects about 8 million people in the United Kingdom and nearly 27 million people in the United States.. It makes exercise difficult, and not exercising increases risk for heart attacks.

People with osteoarthritis should of course avoid contact sports, but exercise is more effective than any medication to treat this condition. The best activities include swimming and other water- based exercises, stationary cycling or cycling on the road, and muscle strengthening exercises using Nautilus machines or similar equipment at a gym. People with knee osteoarthritis should avoid sports that involve sudden shocks to the knee, such as when the foot hits the ground during running. Inactivity and overweight increase your chances of further knee damage and often lead to a joint replacement.

Pain and Inflammation Relief

Fibromyalgia (FMS) and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) are often grouped together because they share many of the same symptoms. Indeed, the majority of symptoms are the same and the major difference in the syndromes is whether fatigue or pain predominates as the chief complaint. (All people with FMS experience fatigue and all people with CFS experience pain. The key distinction is which symptom predominates.)

Further, the brain map of people with CFS and FMS is different from the brain of otherwise healthy people. However, they are not different from each other. It may be that these are the same conditions viewed from a different perspective or in a different stage of the process. This has been compared to viewing a tree during different seasons of the year: it is the same tree, but it looks different depending on when you look at it and from what perspective.

Shared Features of Fibromyalgia (FMS) and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)

CFS and FMS share many body processes in common. Really, all imbalances are rooted in trauma, toxins, deficiency and stress. CFS/FMS are no different.

  • Trauma – For example, brain trauma may link these conditions. Dr. Daniel Amen reported discovering that the majority of those suffering with CFS/FMS share a common brain injury leading to a weak nerve impulse signal (neurasthenia) and an inability to relax (hyper-arousal).
  • Deficiencies – Deficiencies may connect these conditions as well. Dr. William Dement linked CFS/FMS to an imbalance in the Delta brain wave pattern resulting in un-refreshing, non-restorative sleep. A sleep deficiency is coupled with many other deficiencies, primarily Essential Fatty Acids, Vitamin B-12 and magnesium.
  • Toxins – Many physicians have linked toxins from our environment or toxins from infection to the immune system dysregulation of FMS/CFS. These often result in glutathione deficiency. Glutathione is the chief antioxidant in all cells of the human body. It is induced by other antioxidants such as Vitamin C and herbal preparations, especially adaptogens. Using the Vitamin C Flush can help you calibrate the maximum amount of Vitamin C your body can use to induce glutathione.
  • Stress – Speaking of adaptogens, CFS/FMS are associated with people who exhibit a particularly skillful adaptation to stress. For most people, stress starts a process of arousal, adaptation and exhaustion. In people with FMS/CFS the adaptation/exhaustion response is prolonged for months, years and even decades. These ingenious people are very creative in pushing the performance envelope to the brink of exhaustion again and again until they collapse and are finally disabled by fatigue or pain. Adaptogens are critical in helping to repair the damage caused by exhaustion.
Brain trauma, toxins from our environment and infection, deficiencies in nutrients and sleep, and the ability to skillfully prolong the stress response all lead to the constellation of symptoms associated with CFS/FMS. These are the features. In light of these universal symptoms, the distinction of fatigue versus pain seems relatively minor – unless it is happening to you!

According to the excellent research work on CFS/FMS presented in the book Osler's Web, most people with these conditions eventually go into remission on their own. Time and rest are the keys to success.

Specific nutrients mentioned above are also keys to filling the deficiencies and reducing both toxins and stress. Guarding your sleep is crucial to reducing symptoms and moderate daily exercise is your key to improving general performance.

Pain and Inflammation Relief

Let's talk about inflammation. In the short-term, inflammation is your body's intelligent healing response to an injury. The pain and stiffness associated with inflammation after you stub your toe forces you to protect your foot from further injury while the tissues heal. When inflammation becomes systemic and chronic, it damages your body. In 2004, Time magazine published a special issue about inflammation. Heart disease, cancer, diabetes, chronic pain, thyroid disease, autoimmune conditions, even brain conditions like depression and Alzheimer's disease have all been linked to chronic inflammation.

Why is chronic inflammation bad? It damages your cells. Chemical signals created during the inflammatory process are called cytokines. When cytokines are elevated, they interfere with normal cellular communication. They can go even further and damage your cellular membranes, which starts you down the path to organ dysfunction and illness.

One surprising piece of information is that what that what we think of as a "healthy diet" is in fact pro-inflammatory? Doctors, magazines, and websites typically recommend avoiding saturated fat and cholesterol, eating pro-inflammatory polyunsaturated seed oils, and eating grains. Grains, even "heart-healthy" whole grains, contain the pro-inflammatory sugar amylose, which is an element of starch. In fact, an excess of sugar drives inflammation, which plays a part in developing type 2 diabetes. Sugar is known to feed cancer cells, and it is the damage from high levels of sugar in blood that causes plaque to form in the arteries. So we should really get the message to focus on eating low-sugar, not low-fat! in order to curb inflammation

Pain and Inflammation Relief

According to one medical resource, there are 2,186 disease conditions that are characterized by pain. On the other hand, there are people who experience no pain whatsoever. Would you like to live a life without pain? Definitely not! Pain is the special communication from your body that tells you when something is wrong.

We should all know that pain is a message. Our brain tells us that something is so very wrong that our health and well-being are threatened.

Acute pain

We take our hand off of a literal hot stove because of what is called a withdrawal reflex. We will often withdraw our hand or foot from a painful experience even before we have fully defined what is hurting us. In acute (short-term) pain, removing the trigger is very important. Common triggers for acute pain are:

  • Trauma
  • Toxins
  • Deficiencies
  • Stress
Chronic pain

Some pain persists even when you "take your hand off the stove." This is called chronic (long-term) pain. For instance, chronic back pain and chronic headaches persist long after the trauma that caused them. Many times there is no specific trauma. The pain just starts and won't go away.

This happens because of the way our nerves are constructed. You see, nerves don't really feel pain; they merely sense stimulation. It is up to our brain to interpret the signal as pain. We have specific nerve fibers that a activate under specific conditions. One group of fibers may be triggered by a sharp jab, another group by dull pressure. One group may be triggered by heat and another by extreme cold. The nerves carry this specific message to our brain for interpretation. Our brain interprets the signal as painful. The volume of the signal helps us determine the intensity of the pain.

In chronic pain:
The signal goes from the nerve ending to the spine.
From the spine it travels to the brain for interpretation.
Then a signal goes back along that route: from brain to spine and from spine to nerve ending. This return message is supposed to shut off the pain signal when the irritation is gone.

In chronic pain, the return signal is not switched off. Instead, it is amplified.

Have you ever heard a microphone/speaker screech with feedback? This happens when the microphone is too close to the speaker or when it is directed in such a way that the microphone picks up the sound waves from the speaker and amplifies them. This amplified signal is played through the speaker again and picked up by the microphone again – where the signal repeats even louder. The result is the feedback screech that is definitely painful!

Your nerves can amplify pain signals. The signals don't even have to come from the nerve endings. Certain conditions may cause random signals to be amplified and pain may be projected to a perfectly healthy nerve ending. Remember, it is the interpretation of the intensity of this signal that we call pain.

Arthritis, gingivitis, heart disease and psoriasis are conditions that affect very different parts of the body, yet they all have something in common: inflammation. Inflammation also plays a role in dozens of other conditions, from allergies, eczema, bowel disease and autoimmune disorders like lupus to macular degeneration and memory loss.

Inflammation is your immune system's first reaction against infection. The injured area often becomes hot, red, swollen and painful. The heat is produced by the increased blood flow to the injured area. Redness occurs because the battle and repair processes are underway. The area usually becomes swollen because of all the fluid and immune cells at the site. Pain is often the first indicator of inflammation.

Inflammation is an effective way of ensuring that invaders do not enter your body and create havoc, but when it becomes low-grade and chronic, your immune system's army stay revved up and damages healthy issue in the crossfire.

Stress, bacteria, viruses, parasites, environmental toxins, certain foods, smoking, high blood insulin levels and obesity are just a few of the factors that promote inflammation.

Your diet can either promote or prevent inflammation. Foods containing arachidonic acid, such as offal, beef, dairy products promote inflammation. Through a complicated process the body breaks down arachidonic acid into inflammatory compounds.

A healthy diet including six servings of vegetables and one serving of fruit everyday. These are foods that have a low rating on glycemic index, meaning the body takes longer to break them down into blood glucose. They are an excellent choice for reducing inflammation.

Arthritis is an insidious disease, eating its way into the joints of nearly 70 million Americans, or nearly one out of every three U.S. adults. It is considered one of our most prevalent chronic health problems, costing the economy more than $124 billion in healthcare and lost wages each year.1 One of the more unnerving aspects of this disease is the fact its prevalence has nearly doubled in the past two decades,2 adding 23 million more to its "hit list" in the past seven years alone.

Attacking men, women, and even children, arthritis can worsen with a coming storm, a less-than-healthy diet, and advancing age. The pain associated with this disease can be brutal, sometimes turning a healthy hand into a deformed, unrecognisable extremity.

Interesting facts?
Even though many of us have one vision of what arthritis is, there are actually more than 100 different forms of the disease, each presenting with their own particular symptoms. While osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are the most widely recognized, here are just a few of the others:

  • - Bursitis
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Flat Feet
  • Lyme Disease
  • Rheumatic Fever
  • Scleroderma
  • Tennis Elbow

Unfortunately, one-third of us are destined to experience this disease, at least to some degree, as we move into our "golden years." While many have relied inherently on pharmaceuticals to ease arthritis pains, others have sought out more natural approaches to treat the disease.

From massage and yoga to diet and positive thinking, there are a host of therapies not traditionally associated with arthritis that can offer both temporary and lasting relief. It's important to understand how bodywork can help treat the disease and provide comfort, relief, and options to the pain-ridden client.

Cactus Juice Chronic Inflammation and Pain Relief in a Bottle

Pain and Inflammation Relief

Chronic inflammation is now known to be the culprit for almost every disease state that afflicts humans. Even a short list of these diseases – lupus, diabetes, hepatitis, allergies, asthma and arthritis – can be traced to chronic inflammation, and they're all difficult to get under control. Most of these diseases are treated by allopathic (conventional medicine) physicians with traditional pharmaceuticals such as steroids, anti-inflammatory pills, or even injectable immune-modulating agents. Unfortunately, these traditional treatments are toxic to many organ systems and if taken incorrectly can cause serious adverse effects.

Fortunately, there is now a better understanding of chronic inflammation and its causes. A simple explanation of how inflammation occurs will help explain.

First, when an incident occurs to your body, whether it be trauma, infection or other, your immune system sends messengers to the site of the insult to scope out the injury. These messengers cause the initial response of inflammation that almost always occurs with insult or injury: redness, heat, pain and swelling. Next, your immune system will send a series of messages back to the organs that are responsible for producing the immune cells to further fight off infection. These immune cells, known as B and T cells, secrete additional bio-chemicals which instruct the organs of immunity to secrete and produce many other immune-fighting proteins. These proteins are like an army of soldiers and are sent to the front line of the infection or injury and go to battle, fighting any foreign invaders and/or cleaning up the infection or injury. All of this leads to an inflammatory state.

In the short term, inflammation is necessary to fight off infection and help in the healing process. However, if inflammation continues unchecked and does not settle down (e.g., becomes chronic), then serious consequences will occur. Most people suffer from pain and other negative responses when their bodies are undergoing chronic inflammation. Here are four examples:

The damage from chronic inflammation

  1. In hypertensive (high blood pressure) heart failure, where there is a chronic inflammation of the blood vessels and the heart pump has become weaker over time, the body holds onto fluid excessively to help the heart pump more blood volume to each and every part of the body. This actually weakens the heart further, strains the kidneys and worsens the underlying high blood pressure.
  2. Allergy sufferers, the immune system over-reacts to pollen, cat dander, ragweed or some other environmental or food product by producing excessive immune responses and resulting in chronic inflammation. The symptoms of allergies we all know include watery, itchy eyes, runny nose and nasal congestion, wheezing, hives and more. Some allergies are life-threatening.
  3. The latest science has confirmed that even brain diseases, including Alzheimer's disease and multiple sclerosis, are inflammatory in nature.
  4. Finally, America's growing epidemic of obesity and insulin resistance is a direct result of chronic inflammation, caused mainly by excessive fat in the internal organs sending out inflammatory bio-chemicals throughout the body.

Fighting the #1 enemy of our lives
Chronic inflammation is the #1 enemy of our lives! How do we slow it down, stop it, or even reverse it? The answer is so simple,

There are so many causes of inflammation, it is highly likely right now, as you read this, your body has many sites which are inflamed. This is not the problem, though some are not a problem. The problem is all the sites in your body where, for a variety of reasons, your inflammation is not being turned off. Instead, the inflammation just keeps going and going. This is chronic inflammation.

There are several factors which can keep your body from turning off its inflammation response, but three factors are especially prevalent:

  • Chronic Stress – it keeps your body constantly 'revved up', wasting nutrient stores and impairing its ability to stop inflammation from becoming chronic;
  • Chronic Nutritional Deficiencies – without the right nutrition, on a daily basis, your body may not have the right resources to put a halt to on-going inflammation; and
  • Chronic Toxin Overload – in today's world, your body is constantly fighting off toxins, pollutants, and contaminants from so many sources it simply can be too overwhelmed to stop the never-ending and triggered inflammation.
You will notice there is one thing in common with all three of the above factors: chronic. When these adverse factors are chronic (constant), it greatly increases the chance your body's inflammation will be chronic, too. It is exactly this type of inflammation – the chronic kind – the TIME Magazine story warned about because it can be so damaging to your health.

Some common examples of how you could be suffering from various kinds of chronic inflammation and their related health problems include:

  • Muscle, joint, and bone inflammation – causing on-going body and joint pain
  • Respiratory inflammation – causing allergies and breathing difficulties;
  • Arterial inflammation – causing heart health problems
  • Digestive tract inflammation – causing ulcers and irritable bowel syndrome and
  • Widespread body cell inflammation – causing overall fatigue.

Original Article @ David Ogdens Blog

Nopalea Cactus Juice
Pain and Inflammation Relief

In 2004, TIME Magazine ran an amazing story about inflammation and its destructive effect on the body's health.

During the years following TIME Magazine's story, medical science went on to find even more links between chronic inflammation and highly debilitating conditions, including allergies, chronic aches and pains, irritable bowel syndrome, and others.

These links were astounding: so many different conditions can all stem from just one problem – chronic inflammation.

The type of chronic inflammation being studied is not just the 'sore, swollen muscle and joint' kind so many naturally think of. It also includes the deeper and internal types of inflamed tissues affecting vital body systems, such as:

  • Chronic cardiovascular inflammation in the heart and arteries;
  • Chronic pulmonary inflammation in lungs and airways;
  • Chronic digestive inflammation in the stomach, oesophagus, and intestines;
  • Chronic inflammation in the other major organs (liver, kidneys, etc.) and glands; and
  • Chronic widespread body cell inflammation existing throughout the body.
All of these different types of chronic inflammation can lead to many different kinds of severe health problems, such as:
  • On-going and never-ending pain in parts of the body;
  • Allergies and asthmatic reactions;
  • High blood pressure and deteriorating heart and blood vessel health;
  • Ulcers and irritable bowel syndrome; and
  • Constant and overall tiredness and lethargy.
Whenever your body is subject to threatening elements or events, it may counter these attacks with one of its defence mechanisms – inflammation. This is normal.

The threats which could trigger the body's inflammatory response could be little things, such as an injury like a pulled muscle. The threat could be a bacterial intrusion. Stressful feelings and events can also trigger inflammation to flare-up in any number of your body's tissues. Nutritionally deficient diets can lead to inflammatory flare-ups.

Finally, one of the biggest causes of inflammation could be today's world, which relentlessly exposes your body to an overwhelming flood of micro-sized dangers, such as toxins, pollutants, bacteria, viruses, and chemicals from the air you breathe, the water you drink, the foods you eat, and even the things you touch.

Chronic back treatment comes in various forms including exercises, stretches and modalities. When properly implemented, a system of all three components can significantly decrease lower back pain as well as increase overall flexibility and strength. In this article, we are going to introduce you modalities.

Modalities include any method of therapeutic treatment. Items considered modalities include applying heat and cold, over the counter medication, massage devices, cactus juice and others. They are therapeutic devices that assist with the immediate relief of your lower back pain and potentially increase the healing process.

Two of the simplest and most common forms of modalities available at home are heat and cold. A combination of both heat and cold should be used to gain the most effective relief from lower back pain symptoms. Appropriately applying heat and cold to the area(s) in question will significantly decrease the pain and increase flexibility as well as the healing process.

When properly applied, heat will improve blood flow to the lower back pain area in question. By increasing the blood flow, heat allows the affected muscle(s) to relax and become more flexible, in turn decreasing the tightness in the area in question. Cold on the other hand will constrict or tighten the muscle(s) reducing the blood flow to that area. By periodically removing the cold, new blood circulates to the muscle(s) in question creating a better environment for that area of trauma to heal. In addition, cold will help reduce swelling as well as reduce the pain in the affected area(s).

The following are two simple methods for at home lower back pain relief with regards to heat and cold application.

  1. For Heat – Place uncooked rice in a sock and put it in the microwave for 10-15 seconds or until the desired heat is acquired.
  2. For cold, try using a bag of frozen peas or make a homemade ice pack by placing ice in a plastic bag.
These two simple at home modality applications will certainly assist with reducing your pain, increasing flexibility and as well as assisting the healing process.

On a side note, please use caution when entertaining various other modalities such as laser treatments, electric shock and other modalities. They can be detrimental to both your health as well as to your pocket. Keep in mind that to relieve lower back pain symptoms, you really don't have to spend money. You have everything you need at home.

Two recent media articles in the last week concerned the use of prescription opioids. The NY DAILY NEWS warned its readers of the potential dangers of advanced opioid drugs that are designed and clinically tested for pain relief — but potentially open to the kind of rampant drug abuse that has plagued some providers of opioid pain relief drugs in the past (like Oxycontin). For that article, click here: http://articles.nydailynews.com/2012-01-07/news/30603028_1_oxycontin-prescription-drug-abuse-new-pain-pill. Then the same theme popped up Saturday in Everyday Health: http://www.everydayhealth.com/pain-management/will-the-new-hydrocodone-super-drugs-be-a-magnet-for-abuse.aspx?xid=aol_eh-pain_6_20120109_&aolcat=ESO&icid=maing-grid10%7Chtmlws-main-bb%7Cdl8%7Csec3_lnk1%26pLid%3D127515.

The abatement of pain is not only a humane science that provides merciful surcease for cancer sufferers, terminal patients, burn victims and others with chronic pain mad Inflammation — it is big business, accounting for more than $8 billion annually in the US alone. That means it is a potential pot of gold for drug developers, with many more smaller drug companies jumping on the band wagon. There are however many natural solutions which are effective and avoid the possibility of addition. I live in the rural Philippine and it is amazing that the locals have many natural remedies, going out into the jungle and collecting , leaves and roots to alleviate pain. It is not only the jungle that can provide natural pain relief but also places such as the Sonoran Desert with its Nopal cactus

Pain and Inflammation Relief

Many people suffer from back pain. They go to the doctor and the doctor tells them that they have mechanical back pain, so what exactly is it.

Mechanical Back Pain

When back pain is mechanical, it means that the problem lies in the parts of the back that move. This means that you're dealing with your spine; the vertebra and discs as well as the muscles and ligaments. It doesn't sound very specific, but when you consider at what times your back hurts the most, it's probably when you're moving or working it. When back pain comes from this area it might seem alarming, but you don't always have to be worried, you just need to know what's causing it so you can fix it.

Since this type of back pain is often caused from movement of any kind, it's most common that the pain begins when you have done something to injure these parts of the back. It could have been something small, such as lifting a box the wrong way, but you're going to feel it for a long time.

Once you've strained your muscles, you might find that tired muscles cause the back to become weaker or out of alignment. The stronger side of the back pulls at the weaker side and over time this can cause problems with the discs of the back.

Pain Relief

Okay, so you know that you've hurt yourself somehow. It took a while to heal up but you still have pain. How can you fix it?

Most of your health care providers will tell you that after a few days of rest, the best thing you can do to ease your mechanical back pain is to start doing certain exercises. The idea is to strengthen both sides of the back and the muscles in the core so that you're less likely to strain your back. Over time, you'll find that your back is stronger and you're more able to do the lifting and yard work that until now you've worked so hard to avoid.

You should be careful when you're doing any kind of back muscle exercises, however as you could injure weak muscles if you aren't careful. It will likely hurt a little bit at first, but with time you will become stronger and your back and core muscles will be less painful. You'll probably also notice that as you balance the strength of the muscles in your back you begin to reduce your mechanical back pain for good.

Nopalea Cactus Juice contain all 24 Betalains known to man and can help protect against premature aging. You see a cell has a "pre-programmed" lifespan, If the cell ages at the appropriate rate we call that healthy aging. If the cell ages too quickly we call that premature aging. Many aspects of the environment of the cell contribute to how quickly – or how slowly – the cell ages. Among the influences already mentioned are fluid balance, inflammation and toxicity. When fluid is balanced and inflammation and toxicity are low, the cell has the opportunity to age in a healthy way.

Much of the health of the cell depends on the health of the membrane called the cell wall. It requires building blocks made of fats and proteins and pressure pumps fuelled by minerals. Betalains act like anchors to give structure to the proteins and fats that comprise the cell walls. This keeps the cell wall healthy and prevents it from breaking down prematurely. It also makes the cell wall robust and prevents it from "popping" too easily.[J Agric Food Chem. 2002 Nov 6;50(23):6895-901] Further, Betalains create the perfect mineral balance inside the cell (mostly potassium and magnesium) and outside the cell (mostly sodium and calcium). The tension created by these minerals produces electricity that fuels the pump and keeps the pressure inside the cell higher than the pressure outside the cell.[J Ethnopharmacol. 2002 Jan;79(1):17-21] The combination of these effects results in slowing the aging process and allowing the cell to live out its full lifespan in a balanced, healt hy way.

Pain and Inflammation Relief

Nopalea is a product of the Nopal cactus which grows in the harsh Sonoran Desert in the SW USA and Mexico. Some 287 scientific papers have been published on the benefits and attributes of Nopal. These reports are found in the highest quality, peer-reviewed journals and are supported by the National Institutes of Health database to ensure that the conclusions were valid. They scientific papers chronicle improvements in cell function, immunity, detoxification – and especially a reduction in inflammation.

Nopalea promotes optimum cellular health The environment surrounding most cells in the human body is comprised mostly of water. Inflammation in the cells causes the water to heat up. Heat causes the wall of the cell to wither, melt and break down very rapidly. Nopalea™drives down inflammation and turns the fluid environment of the cell into cool, refreshing water that supports a firm, robust cell membrane. A cool environment for the cell slows down the aging process.

During the inflammatory process a chemical is released known as myeloperoxidase (MPE). This is the most powerful oxidant produced by the human neutrophil during acute inflammation, especially from infection or cancer.[Free Radical Res. 2007 Mar;41(3):335-41] Soon, Betalains found in Nopalea douse the wildfire of inflammation caused by MPE and protect the healthy cells.[Fitoterapia. 2001 Mar;72(3):288-90]Meanwhile, Betalains drain toxic waste water surrounding the cells and create a cooling environment conducive to cell health.[J Ethnopharmacol. 2002 Jan;79(1):17-21]

Pain and Inflammation Relief

Millions of Americans suffer from severe back pain or neck pain as a result of bulging or herniated discs. This bulging disc causes a pinched nerve with resulting arm pain or leg pain commonly called sciatica or sciatic nerve pain. In the past, a patient suffering from a bulging disc was usually given pain medication or steroid injections, instructed to refrain from physical activities, referred for physical therapy, and when they weren't progressing they were sent for spinal surgery or simply told to learn to live with it.

What Causes Most Back Pain?

Excessive stress or injury to a disc weakens the outer fibers. As the outer fibers weaken, parts of the interior of the disc bulge out and the disc compresses or loses height. As it loses height it follows that the vertebrae above and below get closer together decreasing the amount of space (spinal stenosis) through which the spinal nerve root exits . As the bulge increases and the space decreases the spinal nerve root that exits at that level is also compressed (pinched). This leads to muscle spasms and inflammation (swelling) further diminishing the space for the nerve; and, because the normal mechanics (movement) of the joints are disturbed, interferes with the normal pumping action supplying nutrition to the disc. Starved for adequate nourishment the outer fibers of the disc become drier and weaker (degenerate) accelerating the process.

Your Immune system

Original Article @ David Ogdens Blog

Nopalea Cactus Juice
Your Immune system orchestra

Have you ever heard an orchestra playing a symphony? Every instrument has a unique sound. Each plays a unique part in the masterpiece. The conductor brings out the best in every musician. Even the acoustics of the surroundings enhance or detract from the performance.

This is an accurate description of the way we harmonize the outside world with our inside world. From the instant of conception our life is a symphony of activity, ever-changing to meet new and varied circumstances. Only a complete platform such as the 10 Essentials for Health and Wellness is strong enough to support this colossal activity!

Your immune system is the great harmonizer between the world inside your body and the world outside. Many scientists believe that the immune system may also be the "mind-body connection," the communication system that changes the health of our body in relationship to our values, thoughts and feelings.

Just as an orchestra has sections, such as strings, brass, woodwind and percussion, the immune system has divisions. The first, important division is "active" versus "passive" immunity.

  • Passive immunity includes barrier protection like your skin as well as surface resistance from bacteria on our skin, in our sinuses, lungs, digestive system and reproductive system. All mucous membranes work to filter what is supposed to come into our body and what should stay out.
  • Active immunity includes two further divisions called "adaptive" and "innate." The word innate describes something you were born with rather than something acquired along the way. The innate immune system is not really specific; it reacts in whatever way is needed at the time – like the musician that plays multiple instruments. Our adaptive immune system "goes to school" to adapt or adjust to its environment. It is very specific, often doing only one thing to contribute to harmony. Elements of our immune system can learn from experience and help us adapt to changing circumstances.
We need harmony between our mind, body and environment. Our immune system usually provides it. But what happens when things go wrong? What happens if we are exposed to "bad" bacteria, viruses or other pathogens?

Disease and our immune system

Sometimes we ask the wrong questions when we start to experience disharmony in our immune system. Sometimes we ask, in effect, "What makes sick people sick?'" That's like asking, "What ingredients make bad music?" As pertinent as that question is to a sick person it is usually more productive to ask, "What makes music great" or, "What keeps healthy people well – and how can I be one of them?"

Wellness is:

  • Created in the way our immune system interacts with our environment
  • Based on our genetics
  • Modified by our behaviour or lifestyle

Illness is actually a disharmony produced by trauma, toxins from inside or outside our body, deficiencies in vital elements like air, water, sleep and nutrients, as well as emotional distress.

In order to help protect against disease and achieve wellness we must restore harmony between our world and our immune system. Immune-system harmony is the exclusive realm of the 10 Essentials!

Pain and Inflammation Relief

When inflammation is chronic, this poses a serious problem. Your body responds to a threat with increased blood flow, chemicals and cells ready to fight. If you have chronic inflammation in your body, then your body feels that it is continually under attack. If your body is incessantly under attack, then you will not have the energy or the resources to experience optimal health. When your body is repeatedly under siege you can begin to manifest disease. This may be seen as heart disease, diabetes, cancers, arthritis, auto immune conditions and many more.

We hear a lot about drugs that are anti-iflammatories. We recognize that chronic inflammation is bad and so we have created drugs that are meant to stop the inflammatory process. Using drugs to decrease inflammation can be counter productive for your body. Along with decreasing inflammation the drugs shut down processes that they are not intended to and they can be very harmful for your liver. When you use a drug to decrease inflammation you may not be taking care of the root of the problem. Why do you have inflammation?

Many things can cause chronic inflammation. Anything that your body views as foreign can trigger the healing response. Everyone's body is unique and diverse substances can cause different reactions in people. It can be a food, a grain of pollen, a perfume, a drug, animal dander, etc, . The point here is to find and remove the things that cause low grade chronic inflammation in your body, and seek natural replacements for drugs which fight chronic inflammation
