Pain and Chronic Inflammation relief
The sensation of pain that we feel is a result of how our brain transmits the signals that it receives, so it makes sense to assume that our brains can influence and manage the level of pain we feel should we decide to attempt to employ it as an effective chronic pain control tool.
There are many visualisation techniques that we can try that might help with pain management. Visualisation, also called guided imagery, is used and recommended by medical experts in the treatment of many conditions, including cancer, where the affected person may picture themselves in idyllic and serene surroundings feeling incredibly well and healthy or take an imaginary trip through the inside of their body as a way to fight and eliminate the cancer cells.
To begin the procedure of visualisation the body and mind must be in a relaxed state. However, if we are in the grip of chronic pain and anxiety it is difficult to focus on anything let alone relax, so here are some techniques to practice to get you in the right mindset to begin.
Lie down in a dimly lit room with your eyes shut or alternatively focus on something within the room. Slow down your breathing and breathe in and out becoming conscious of each breath and visualizing the air coming in and out of your lungs and your diaphragm moving up and down.
When you're feeling relaxed try and focus on a part of your body for example a hand, any part that's not the source of the pain as this will then detract from the pain. Just imagine that your hand is becoming warmer, try to really feel the heat. Now position the heated hand on the source of pain so that the sense of warmth is sent to the painful place, feel in your thoughts how comforting this is.
Now imagine you are about to be given an injection of morphine to ease your symptoms, envision the doctor swabbing the painful area and feel the sensation of the medicine going into your body, numbing the pain and flooding your body with a sense of well being. Another method is to actually transport the pain around one's body using your powers of visualisation, try and transfer the pain to a part of your body that can manage better with it, if you can do this you might even be able to move the pain out of your body entirely, flinging it out into the air.
These techniques may take a bit of practice, but they don't involve a trip to your physician or have a financial cost. You will be calm and focused and you will at least truly feel that you have some power over the pain you are enduring where until now you have been powerless.
