Neck pain can be brought on by an injury or from disorders in the structure of the neck, including problems with the cervical vertebrae. The intensity of neck pain can be minor or severe and is triggered by such things as prolonged computer use, an awkward sleeping position, stress, a herniated disc and the growth of tumours. If your pain is minor, continue on with your daily activities as you normally do. Your pain should subside within a few days or a week at the most. Try exercising the muscles in your neck and return them to painless functioning, sit in an upright position while looking straight ahead. Then tilt your head to the left and to the right, slowly, one inch at a time. Finally, stretch your neck downward and hold your chin to your chest for up to ten seconds.

In addition to these neck exercises, you can also apply heat or ice to the affected area every two to three hours. Do this for up to 15 minutes at a time to relieve cramping and swelling. If none of these solutions seem to be working, you can make another appointment with your doctor or possibly see if a chiropractor can help you attain better relief.

How to avoid Neck Pain from Developing

If your job requires you to be sedentary, take frequent stretch breaks and change positions. A few seconds every hour is all that is required in order for you to prevent neck pain from starting or experiencing it to a lesser degree if you already have it.

Take care when lifting anything heavy, if you must lift on a regular basis, make sure your knees are bent and you are lifting with your legs while doing this in order to prevent back pain from radiating up to your neck. Also, avoid moving your head around a lot or frequently reaching with your arms over your head. Finally, and perhaps the most importantly, make sure that you are sitting in a comfortable, ergonomic position every day.
