Pain and Chronic Inflammation relief
Typically when we think of inflammation, we think of a body part becoming swollen from injury, like the swelling of a sprained ankle. But inflammation can also be caused by allergies to food, medications or environmental pollutants and can manifest in many different parts of the body. Chronic inflammation can lead to serious diseases such as atherosclerosis (hardening and thickening of the arteries), rheumatoid arthritis and even cancer. For example there has been much discussion about the connection between neurological inflammation and autism. There is an overwhelming amount of information online about the link between inflammation and both autism and asthma. I recently found a very interesting article from NIH on this topic. In this study, the Dr. Kevin G. Becker presents the hygiene hypothesis:
The hygiene hypothesis is a widely held theory of the etiology of asthma and atopic disorders which builds on observations of rural versus urban distribution of disease. It suggests that cleaner environmental conditions in westernised countries, as compared to developing countries, play a role in the increase of the prevalence of these disorders in western countries.
Becker goes on to explain that, despite the many reports describing imbalances in immune and inflammatory processes in people with autism,
At this time there is little definitive evidence to support any single theory of the fundamental biological nature of autism. While we don't have all the answers, inflammation appears to play a key role in autism and asthma. So, what can you do to help reduce inflammation?
Some natural ways to combat inflammation
- Start eating more whole foods and to eliminate processed foods from your diet diet.
- Consider eliminating Gluten and Milk products from your diet it is part of the popular "Autism Diet" and a lot of people are sensitive to these foods.
- Aspirin is a totally natural anti-inflammatory medication remember aspirin comes from the bark of trees in the rainforest. There is evidence suggesting that a daily dose may also work to fight colon cancer and Alzheimer's disease by reducing inflammation in the digestive tract and brain. it can be taken to control high blood pressure.
- Omega-3 Fatty Acids We takes fish oils as a family everyday.
- Fruits and Veggies At each meal fill half your plate with produce that contains protective, inflammation stopping phytonutrients.
- Liquid Antioxidants - Orange juice contains both vitamin C and flavonoids, which as you know are powerful antioxidants. Cactus juice is another excellent product to fight inflammation
- Regular exercise - Immediately after even moderate physical activity, the body makes and uses more antioxidants, which cut levels of inflammation.
- Sleep and reducing stress also help to cut back on inflammation.
