Natural Inflammation Relief

Inflammation is when a part of the body becomes swollen and is usually a reaction to an injury, an example would be the swelling of a sprained ankle. But inflammation can be caused by allergies to food, medications or environmental irritants and can manifest in many different parts of the body: skin, muscles, organs, etc. Chronic inflammation can lead to serious diseases such as atherosclerosis (hardening and thickening of the arteries), rheumatoid arthritis and even cancer.

According to the statistics from the World Health Organization, about 12.9 million people worldwide died from some form of cardiovascular disease in 2004. And each year, the World Cancer Research Fund estimated that some eight million people died from cancer. Heart disease and cancer, the deadly manifestation of chronic inflammation, are expected to remain as the leading causes of death in developed countries for many years to come.

Study after study shows that the risk of heart disease and cancer are modifiable by our lifestyle choices which include the food we choose to eat each day. With every bite that we take, we're either balancing the pro- and anti-inflammatory compounds in the body, or tipping the scale to one end. To shift the balance to your favour, other than incorporating more natural anti-inflammatory foods in your diet, it's also equally important to avoid or cut down on foods which are known to promote inflammation.

How chronic inflammation worsens your health over time

Though you may not see or even feel chronic inflammation, it could be silently causing trouble within your body right now. Over time, it can result in two kinds of damage: first to the immediate area of your body that's chronically inflamed; and second to your overall health as well. Common problems can include:

  • Heart Problems – chronic inflammation is believed to contribute to the formation of plaque in blood vessels, as well as the formation of blood clots. When these blood clots break free into the blood, they can block blood flow to the brain or heart, resulting in a heart attack or stroke.
  • Brain Problems – chronic inflammation plays a role in Alzheimer's disease, yet scientists are still uncertain what that role is. However, one theory is that inflammation kicks into gear because of the plaques and tangles in the brains of Alzheimer's patients. In trying to solve the problem, inflammation just makes matters worse.
  • Joint Problems – chronic inflammation of the joints can result in destroyed ligaments and tendons, damage to joint cartilage and bone and even bone erosion. This leads to pain, deformity and an inability to perform daily tasks – drastically affecting quality of life.
  • Mouth and Gum Problems – dental researchers once thought bacterial infections caused gum disease, but now it is thought that some of the more severe symptoms of gum disease are attributable to chronic inflammation. The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, part of the National Institutes of Health, report that inflammation can even break down bone and connective tissue that keep the teeth in place.
  • Emotional Health Problems – chronic inflammation may even play a role in your emotions. Scientists at the University of Illinois (Champaign/Urbana) discovered that an enzyme secreted by the immune system caused inflammation-related, depression-like symptoms in mice. Because inflammation is linked with conditions often accompanied by depression – such as diabetes, cancer and heart disease – researchers expect that this study will provide insight into chronic inflammation's role in depression.
  • Cancer Problems – although researchers haven't discovered the exact mechanism of chronic inflammation's role in cancer, they believe it encourages cancer growth. According to the American Cancer Society, inflammation creates just the right conditions for cancer cells to grow and multiply.

Healthy Weight Loss

Original Article @ Lose Weight USA

Healthy Weight Loss
Two is company

Healthy weight loss is much easier to accomplish if you have a partner or friend to share the experience. Studies have been carried out which result in up to a 350% improvement. Below are three tips to follow.

  1. Write down your reasons: Take a half hour with your spouse to write down all the reasons you want to lose fat. Maybe it's to look and feel better for each other … to set a good example for your kids … or maybe it's because your doctor told you that you're pre-diabetic. Whatever the reasons, discuss them with your spouse, write them down, and continually remind each other your reasons for healthy weight loss.

The next time either of you are tempted to "stray" from your your healthy weight loss plan, ask each other this question: "Is it worth sabotaging your progress?" Coach each other through it if you have to: "I bet you'd eat that piece of cake in less than 5 minutes. Is 5 minutes of pleasure really worth it?" The answer is simple when you take a moment to reflect and it's very empowering once you put it to practice.

  2. Daily reminders: there are a variety of strategies you can use to keep your portions under control, stay active, and continually achieve new levels of results. For example, before each meal have a large glass of water, a slice of apple, and a couple almonds. This way, you won't go into your meal starved and ready to devour anything in site. Instead, you'll feel much more in control, relaxed, and ready to make wise decisions and put your fork down when comfortably full, not stuffed. Make a pact with your spouse that you'll remind each other of this trick before each meal and look forward to a variety of other effective strategies like this in February!
  3. Be active, have fun: rather than going out for drinks with your spouse, invite him/her to do something active that you both enjoy, such as going on a bike ride, rock-climbing, racquetball, or hiking. You get to enjoy good quality time with your spouse, as well as help create the very important "caloric deficit" (expending more calories than you consume) that's necessary for healthy weight loss.
Also, if you have a favourite TV show that you enjoy with your spouse, incorporate some sort of physical activity with it, such as jumping rope or an ab routine. Any amount of extra activity (wink, wink ; ) adds up and contributes to your fat loss efforts!

Lower Back Pain and Inflammation Relief

Many doctors may prescribe above the counter medicines such as a non-steroid anti inflammatory (NSAID) like Ibuprofen, some patients do not think in the usefulness of OTC drugs. These sufferers will then insist that the doctor prescribe a more powerful alternative.

Opium or opium based drugs are often prescribed to fight back pain, even when it's not essential. While these opium based drugs are efficient at relieving pain, there side effects can effect your daily life and therefore are notoriously addictive when misused. Narcotic addiction is the main reason why these pain killers are difficult to get recommended for lower back pain relief.

In addition to the risks of addiction, it has been shown that Opioid based drugs are not all that effective in dealing with continual lower back pain. For long term lower back pain relief because of to a persistent issue, it has been demonstrated that non-addictive pain killers are just as effective as the more robust Opioid drugs. Nevertheless doctors may consider persevering with with narcotic pain relief therapy if the affected person is allergic to other drugs such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen or if the facet results of the non-narcotic are as well severe for the affected person.

Pain management is a big part of providing lower back pain relief. However if the doctor does not feel that it's essential to use some thing as strong as a narcotic, the affected person should believe in that recomendation rather than try to shop around for better pills. While narcotics can sometimes be more successful than OTC drugs, in many instances they only appear to be assisting more because of the "high" that many people may experience when using them. Addiction and drug abuse are very real problems and narcotic pain killers are a gateway into those issues when used incorrectly.

Pain and Inflammation Relief

Any kind of discomfort or pain sensed in the right or left side of the chest is referred to as chest pain. There are several medical reasons that can be the causes of chest pain. In this article, we find the main reasons for left and right sided chest pain.

Heart attack is the first thing that comes to mind. However, it is not essential that all types of chest pain are related to heart health. Chest pain can be caused due to non-cardiac problems as well. Sometimes, the pain may not serious and only causes mild inconvenience. However, there are times when chest pain can be an indication of threat to life. Many a times, abdomen pain is mistaken with chest pain. Chest pain due to muscle catch is quite a common occurrence. Suppose, while at a high speed you stop suddenly, you can get a twitch in the muscles of the chest wall. This can result in severe chest pain. Muscle catch can be due to fast breathing or abnormal posture as well.

Causes of Left Sided Chest Pain

Since our heart is located at the left side of the chest, left sided chest pain causes people to panic as heart attack is often thought to be the prime cause of left sided chest pain. It is not so every time. Even minor problems like acid reflux, heartburn or gas can lead to left sided chest pain. The gas formation in the intestines and stomach give an upward thrust on the chest wall that can give rise to a condition of breathlessness or tightness or pain in the chest, which is similar to cardiac pain.

Whenever, there is some mental stress or physical exertion, the heart needs more blood to sustain the heart beat. In case of any blockage in the artery, sufficient amount of oxygen fails to reach the heart and this causes acute pain. This kind of pain is due to heart attack. This pain is usually not confined to only to the chest, but gets extended to the shoulder, the throat and sometimes the jaw. It is accompanied by other symptoms like palpitation, excessive sweating, vomiting or paleness of skin.

Causes of Right Sided Chest Pain

Right sided chest pain is unlikely to be a result of any problems related to the heart. Some of the causes of right sided chest pain can still be dangerous to the health; while others are not serious conditions. The serious causes behind right sided chest pain are: right sided chest pain due to pneumonia, gall bladder diseases or liver inflammation. If there is right sided chest pain, the first thing that needs to be identified is whether the pain is oriented locally or centrally. In some cases, it has been observed that when the gas problems turn severe, an acute pain is experienced by the patient. In these cases, the patient fails to determine whether the origin of the pain is the chest or the abdomen.

The most commonly observed cause of right sided chest pain is gallstones. Gallstones are formed due to crystallization of bile and cholesterol in the gallbladder, which leads to an inflammation of the gallbladder. This type of pain is severe and constant. Right sided chest pain could be the symptom of some liver diseases like hepatitis as well. Though it is not a very common symptom, in certain cases, it has been noticed that prior to the diagnosis of hepatitis, patients have complained of right sided chest pain.

The root cause of chest pain needs to be established, before starting of any treatment. Thus, anyone suffering from chest pain should consult the doctor without any delay. In case of any kind of chest pain, electrocardiogram and chest radiograph may be suggested to detect any heart problems.

Pain and Inflammation Relief

Original Article @ David Ogdens Blog

Nopalea Cactus Juice
Pain and Inflammation Relief

Many arthritis sufferers use what is known as complementary and alternative practices to manage their symptoms. Patients use alternatives for many reasons. It may be because conventional medical treatment isn't giving them the relief they need, or they may be concerned about the side effects associated with drug therapy, else they may feel that alternative therapies are safer because they are "natural." Whatever the reason, many patients are finding additional relief by incorporating these five practices into their arthritis management regimen:

  1. Regular exercise
The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) recommends that arthritis sufferers use these types of exercise:
    • 1. Range-of-motion exercises such as dancing to help maintain normal joint movement, relieve stiffness, and increase flexibility.
    • Strengthening exercises such as weight training to help keep or increase muscle strength.
    • Aerobic or endurance exercises such as bicycle riding to improve cardiovascular fitness, help control weight, and improve overall function. Weight control is important because extra weight puts extra pressure on many joints.
  2. A healthy diet
Since there are over 100 known types of arthritis, there is no single diet that will help everyone. However, the Arthritis Foundation has established the following guidelines to assist patients in maintaining a diet that will help manage their symptoms:
    • 1. Eat a variety of foods, and avoid those that can interact with your medications.
    • Use fat and cholesterol in moderation.
    • Eat plenty of vegetables, fruits and whole-grain products.
    • Use sugar and salt in moderation.
    • Drink alcohol in moderation.
    • Take in the daily requirements of vitamins and minerals, including calcium.
  3. Dietary supplements
The American College of Rheumatology has noted that there is some evidence that ginger and willow bark extract may relieve pain.

These remedies, however, may contain chemicals that are similar to those found in naproxen (Aleve) and ibuprofen (Advil), which can cause inflammation of the stomach and intestines. They also may interfere with blood clotting and cause fluid retention, which may be problematic for people with high blood pressure or cardiovascular disease.

    • Chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine supplements are sold separately or in combination, and are recommended for pain relief when used in conjunction with other pain medication. Although their effectiveness is unproven, the college says they
"appear to be relatively safe, and may be worth considering for people who have severe pain despite conventional treatments."
    • Fish oils that contain omega-3 fatty acids have been reported to relieve pain and joint tenderness. It may take several months before a patient sees results. Side effects include gastrointestinal distress and breath odour.
  4. Manage stress
Stress is a normal part of life; but for arthritis sufferers, there are additional stress factors like increased dependence on family members and changes in appearance due to joint deformities or the side effects of drugs.

The Arthritis Foundation says that controlling stress is imperative for arthritis patients because

"when you feel stressed, your body's muscles become tense. This muscle tension can increase your pain and fatigue and may limit your abilities, which can make you feel helpless."
Stress can lead to depression, which can touch off a cycle of stress, pain, fatigue, and limited/lost abilities. Managing stress can break that cycle.
  5. Hot and cold applications
The Mayo Clinic makes the following recommendations:
"Heat will help ease your pain, relax tense, painful muscles and increase the regional flow of blood. One of the easiest and most effective ways to apply heat is to take a hot shower or bath for 15 minutes. Other options include using a hot pack, an electric heat pad set on its lowest setting or a radiant heat lamp with a 250-watt reflector heat bulb to warm specific muscles and joints. If your skin has poor sensation or if you have poor circulation, don't use heat treatment.

Cold may dull the sensation of pain. Cold also has a numbing effect and decreases muscle spasms. Don't use cold treatments if you have poor circulation or numbness. Techniques may include using cold packs, soaking the affected joints in cold water and ice massage."

Are you protecting your health

Original Article @ David Ogdens Blog

Pain and Inflammation Relief

In today's world, toxins bombard us from all areas of our lives… chemicals in our food, water and air, cleaning products, pesticides, herbicides and a host of other environmental pollutants. Air Pollution in the Philippines is particularly bad

To counter these increasingly prolific external toxins, a variety of methods have been proposed – from detoxifying products such as colon cleanses and sweat spas to extreme fasts and special diets. But these methods are unproven and potentially harmful. One product that is been used in Manila is a paint that uses sunlight to transform poisons in the air, particularly nitrogen oxide, into a harmless residue that is easily washed away by rain.

Nutrients in Nopalea cactus juice can also help your body detoxify by supporting your body's natural detoxification processes, many of which occur in the liver and kidneys.

The liver's role in detoxifying the body

The liver is the largest internal organ in the body and performs many vital functions, including:

  • Creation of bile, a yellowish-green fluid that is necessary for digestion
  • Production of clotting factors and proteins
  • Regulation of glucose in the blood and storage of extra sugar
  • Storage of vitamins and minerals
The liver also plays a key role in detoxifying your body. Enzymes in the liver help break down toxins in the bloodstream, which are then excreted into the bile or blood. Bile by-products enter the intestine and eventually leave through the stool. Blood by-products head toward the kidneys.

Detoxifying the body is not without risks to the liver: over time, breaking down certain prescription and over-the-counter medications, chemicals and alcohol can damage liver cells, which can result in liver disease.

The kidneys' role in detoxifying the body

The kidneys are two fist-sized, bean-shaped organs that work to keep the blood clean and chemically balanced. Each day, the kidneys process about 200 quarts of blood, sifting out about two quarts of waste and extra water, which become urine.

Waste in the blood comes from food and the normal breakdown of tissue. After the body takes what it needs from food, the waste is sent to the blood. Units in the kidneys called nephrons filter out this waste, keeping normal proteins and cells in the bloodstream. There are about a million nephrons in each kidney. If the kidneys did not filter waste, it would build up in the blood and damage the body.

In addition to waste removal, kidneys also:

  • Regulate the body's salt, potassium and acid levels
  • Produce a hormone that stimulates the bone marrow to make red blood cells
  • Release hormones that regulate blood pressure
  • Help maintain calcium for bones and for chemical balance in the body
Kidney diseases, arising from conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, birth defects and genetic diseases, attack the nephrons, reducing their filtering ability. When kidney function is less than 25%, serious health problems can occur. When it drops below 15%, dialysis or kidney transplant is required to prevent death.

Toxins, medications and drugs can also damage the kidneys.
