High Bloof Pressure and inflammation

High Blood Pressure and Inflammation

On Friday at the supermarket, they were offering blood pressure checks, so Jasmin had a check which raised some questions with a result of 170 systolic pressure, which is quite a bit above the norm of 120-130. I decided to do some further investigation as generally we eat a good diet with no salt and are non smokers, so there must be another cause. The first thing I learnt was that you actually cannot rely on just one reading, you need to take a number of readings at the same time for a number of day.

Stress can increase blood pressure but is not the main cause, one also has to check cholesterol levels as well, so be probably need to do some further tests such as a C-reactive protein blood test to look for evidence of increased cardiovascular risk. A C-reactive protein measurements may help predict if she is at risk of developing a variety of heart and circulatory disorders. I believe it is unlikely she has a problem, but it is a well to check it out. Hypertension or high blood pressure can be effected by how much water and salt we have in our body, our bodies hormones and the condition of our kidneys, nervous system and blood vessels. We both take Nopalea cactus juice on a daily basis so we do not think that inflammation is to blame, perhaps it was just a faulty reading.

Cactus Juice Chronic Inflammation and Pain Relief

Original Article @ David Ogdens Blog

I have been writing about pain and inflammation for over a year now, so by now most of you will have got the message about the root causes of inflammation and the difference between good inflammation such as when the body reacts to injury and bad inflammation when the body's reaction get out of control called chronic inflammation.

Now some reactions are to injuries inside the body, caused by the likes of abrasion. Here one of the the main culprits can be the food that we consume, because food can contain a number of harmful fats, sugars and other bad ingredients. Some people have food allergies or bad reactions to certain types of food, I for instance cannot tolerate any form of seafood. being a sailor and living in the Philippines where fish is part of the staple diet does not help.

It is important to control inflammation as if it continues uncheck can set the stage for a long list of ill-health and chronic diseases, including malabsorption of nutrients, allergies, autoimmune disorders, fatigue, obesity, hormone disorders, mood disorders (anxiety, depression), high blood pressure, cholesterol and a multitude of of digestive disorders.

I find that by watching what I eat, taking regular exercise, and avoiding stressful situations, along with taking Nopalea cactus juice on a daily basis, provides me with a good nights sleep to recharge my body and mind and also keeps arthritic pain in my joints at bay.

Pain and Inflammation Relief

Original Article @ David Ogdens Blog

I have always wondered why there is so much advertising of health related products in the media today, it would seem that everyone from children to adults is in need of supplements and pills to keep disease at bay and live a better life.

Yes science provides a better understanding of the likes of inflammation which has been tied to life threatening diseases such as cancer, dementia, stroke, heart disease, and diabetes. But a lot of the cause is self inflicted, its is what we eat and the way we live.

Take inflammation for example, a little inflammation is good, it is how a healthy body responds to injury and protects you. As a wound heals the inflammation subsides, but sometimes the inflammation does not subside because of ongoing trauma.

So what are the causes of bad inflammation, the most likely are pollution from the atmosphere, car exhausts and smoking, or else from what we eat or lack of exercise.

We've learned that abdominal fat tissue is a hotbed of inflammation that pours out all kinds of inflammatory molecules,
says Dr. Peter Libby of Harvard Medical School. Losing excess weight lowers levels of C-reactive protein, an indicator of inflammation. This can be achieved in a matter of weeks.

Another Harvard medical professor, Christopher Cannon, advocates an anti-inflammatory diet—high in whole grains, unsaturated fats, fruits, vegetables, nuts, fish, poultry, eggs, and some dairy.

To reduce inflammation we need to remove the cause as soon as possible, this might mean giving up smoking changing your diet and taking up exercise. We have legs for walking, so use them instead of taking the car, give up late night movies and TV dinners, instead sit a table and share a family meal together

Chronic Inflammation Relief

Original Article @ David Ogdens Blog

Natural Pain and Inflammation Relief

Chronic inflammation has been linked to a number of diseases including heart disease, strokes and cancer, and now scientists believe that excess body weight and high fat foods may further increase risks

Until now anti inflammatory drugs have been used to counter inflammation but now research has lead to a link between inflammation and what we eat, changing our diet may keep inflammation at bay and help reduce the risk of inflammation related diseases

Inflammation is the body's natural response to injury and outside irritants. But when the irritants don't let up, because of a diet of high-fat foods, too much body fat and smoking, for example, the immune system can spiral out of control and increase the risk for disease. Experts say when inflammation becomes chronic it can damage heart valves and brain cells, trigger strokes, and promote resistance to insulin, which leads to diabetes. It also is associated with the development of cancer.

It would seem that dietary fibre for example from ,whole grains may have a role in preventing inflammation and a result study also showed that dairy foods may ease inflammation in certain cases.

One substance known as C-reactive protein, measured with a simple blood test, is an indicator of inflammation in the body. A report published in Archives of Internal Medicine in 2007, which analysed results of 33 separate studies, found that losing weight can lower C-reactive protein levels. For each one kilogram, or 2.2 pounds, of weight loss, whether by dieting, exercise or surgery, the mean reduction in C-reactive protein among participants was 0.13 milligram per litre

Obesity is a growing problem worldwide and the link between inflammation and killer diseases is one more reason to watch what one eats.

How To Reduce Athritis Pain

Original Article @ David Ogdens Blog

Nopalea Cactus Juice
Natural Pain and Inflammation Relief

You diet is not a cure for Arthritis, however it can help relieve pain and inflammation. Below are seven food that are good for Arthritis suffers and will help reduce the pain and also help you lose weight at the same time.

People who suffer from arthritis are familiar with the pains, cracks and pops define the condition. But small changes in your diet can yield big rewards in managing the disease.

"Food isn't a panacea, but some can make your joints healthier," says Leslie Bonci, R.D., director of Sports Nutrition in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh.
You may not be able to give up on pain relievers, however a diet rich in these foods can make you healthier and maybe lighter. After all, every pound you carry around your belly puts 10 pounds of pressure on your joints.
  1. : Fatty fish (salmon, herring, sardines) or any other food with omega-3 fatty acids, such as walnuts, soy beans, flax seeds, canola oil and pumpkin seeds Why it's a good arthritis food: Omega-3s decrease the production of chemicals that spread inflammation, plus they inhibit enzymes that trigger it

Fatty fish also contain vitamin D, which helps prevent swelling and soreness.

When the Women's Health Study followed 30,000 women for 11 years, researchers found that those who got less than 200 international units (IU) – about 3 ounces of sardines – of vitamin D a day from their diet were 33% more likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis than women who got more.

  2. : Extra-virgin olive oil:

Why it's a good arthritis food: Olive oil contains oleocanthal, which blocks enzymes involved in inflammation.

About 3 tablespoons of extra-virgin olive oil acts like one-tenth of a dose of ibuprofen, according to a study at the Monnell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia. That may not be much, but small dietary changes add up.

  3. : Sweet peppers, citrus fruits and other vitamin C-rich foods

Why it's a good arthritis food: Vitamin C protects collagen, a major component of cartilage. Inadequate amounts may increase your risk for some kinds of arthritis.

Canadian study of 1,317 men found that those who got 1,500 milligrams of vitamin C through food or supplements daily had a 45% lower risk of gout (a painful condition also known as gouty arthritis) than those who consumed less than 250 milligrams a day.

"Foods that are high in vitamin C have other plant nutrients that you won't get from a vitamin C supplement," Bonci says.
Broccoli and cauliflower, for instance, have a chemical – indole-3-carbinol – that may protect us from certain cancers, including breast cancer.

  4. Brazil nuts Why it's a good arthritis food: Brazil nuts contain huge amounts of selenium – 272 micrograms in just three or four nuts, compared to 63 micrograms in 3 ounces of tuna.

For example, a 2005 University of North Carolina study found that the participants with the highest levels of selenium had a 40% lower risk than those with the lowest levels.

Low selenium may also be linked to rheumatoid arthritis. The mineral helps antioxidants clear out cell-damaging free radicals, aids the regulation of the thyroid gland and may prevent cancer.

  5. Onions and leeks Why it's a good arthritis food: Onions and leeks contain quercetin, an antioxidant that may inhibit inflammatory chemicals, much like aspirin and ibuprofen do. But research is limited, Bonci says.

  6. Tart cherries Why it's a good arthritis food:
"This old wives' tale now has science to back it up," Bonci says.
A University of Michigan study suggests that a diet plump with tart cherries can cut inflammation in animals by 50%. And a 2009 study at Baylor Research Institute in Dallas found that 56% of patients with osteoarthritis had more than 20% improvement in pain and function after taking cherry pills for eight weeks.

The magic ingredient is anthocyanins, the pigments that give cherries – and grapes, black raspberries and eggplant – their vibrancy. They're also powerful antioxidants that cut inflammation.

  7. Green tea Why it's a good arthritis food: Studies show that certain antioxidant compounds in the brew lessen the incidence and severity of arthritis.

One University of Michigan study found that epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) lowers production of inflammation-causing substances in the body that cause joint damage in arthritis sufferers.

Cactus Juice Chronic Inflammation and Pain Relief

You may be thinking that staying active is the last thing someone with arthritis wants to do, when energy levels are often low and joints are often inflamed.

However, studies show that regular exercise and activity may help reduce joint pain and stiffness, increase joint mobility and muscle strength and improve psychological well-being. Research has shown that strength training exercise, physical therapy, and lifestyle changes all have the potential to even slow the progression of the condition which means less joint damage. Recommended exercises include swimming, stationary bicycles, weight lifting and yoga.

My personal preference has always always been a power rower, but I do not have access to one know so have to rely on cycling, I regularly use my mountain bike for trips into town, its faster and more convenient as do not have to search for parking spaces.

four weight lifting use basket rather than shopping trolleys and in the home you can replace weight with using shopping bags with a few items in them.

Later this month our community pool should reopen, which is a great way to exercise, in the meantime play badminton on a regular basis with my partner.

I also find that taking Nopalea cactus juice keeps the pain and inflammation at bay as well as providing a daily energy boost and provides me with a good nights rest.

Inflammation and what we eat

Original Article @ David Ogdens Blog

Nopalea Cactus Juice

The discovery a few years ago that inflammation in the artery wall is the real cause of heart disease is slowly leading to a paradigm shift in how heart disease and other chronic ailments will be treated.

The long-established dietary recommendations have created epidemics of obesity and diabetes, the consequences of which dwarf any historical plague in terms of mortality, human suffering and dire economic consequences.

Despite the fact that 25% of the population takes expensive statin medications and despite the fact we have reduced the fat content of our diets, more Americans will die this year of heart disease than ever before.

Statistics from the American Heart Association show that 75 million Americans currently suffer from heart disease, 20 million have diabetes and 57 million have pre-diabetes. These disorders are affecting younger and younger people in greater numbers every year.

Simply stated, without inflammation being present in the body, there is no way that cholesterol would accumulate in the wall of the blood vessel and cause heart disease and strokes. Without inflammation, cholesterol would move freely throughout the body as nature intended. It is inflammation that causes cholesterol to become trapped.

Inflammation is not complicated — it is quite simply your body's natural defence to a foreign invader such as a bacteria, toxin or virus. The cycle of inflammation is perfect in how it protects your body from these bacterial and viral invaders. However, if we chronically expose the body to injury by toxins or foods the human body was never designed to process,a condition occurs called chronic inflammation. Chronic inflammation is just as harmful as acute inflammation is beneficial.

What thoughtful person would willfully expose himself repeatedly to foods or other substances that are known to cause injury to the body? Well, smokers perhaps, but at least they made that choice willfully.

Chronic Inflammation Relief

Original Article @ David Ogdens Blog

Nopalea Cactus Juice
Natural Pain and Inflammation Relief

Chronic Inflammation occurs when the bodies natural defences are not switched off, the three most likely causes are:-

  1. Chronic Stress – it keeps your body constantly "revved up," wasting nutrient stores and impairing its ability to stop inflammation from becoming chronic
  2. Chronic Nutritional Deficiencies – without the right nutrition, on a daily basis, your body may not have the right resources to put a halt to ongoing inflammation
  3. Chronic Toxin Overload – in today's world, your body is constantly fighting off toxins, pollutants and contaminants from so many sources that it simply can be too overwhelmed to stop the never ending, triggered inflammation
There's one thing in common with all three of the above factors: "Chronic". When these adverse factors are chronic (constant), it greatly increases the chance that your body's inflammation will be chronic, too. And it's exactly this type of inflammation – the chronic kind – that the TIME Magazine story warned about some years ago because it can be so damaging to your health.

How chronic inflammation worsens your health over time Though you may not see or even feel chronic inflammation, it could be silently causing trouble within your body right now. Over time, it can result in two kinds of damage: first to the immediate area of your body that's chronically inflamed; and second to your overall health as well. Common problems can include:

  • Heart Problems – chronic inflammation is believed to contribute to the formation of plaque in blood vessels, as well as the formation of blood clots. When these blood clots break free into the blood, they can block blood flow to the brain or heart, resulting in a heart attack or stroke.
  • Brain Problems – chronic inflammation plays a role in Alzheimer's disease, yet scientists are still uncertain what that role is. However, one theory is that inflammation kicks into gear because of the plaques and tangles in the brains of Alzheimer's patients. In trying to solve the problem, inflammation just makes matters worse.
  • Joint Problems – chronic inflammation of the joints can result in destroyed ligaments and tendons, damage to joint cartilage and bone and even bone erosion. This leads to pain, deformity and an inability to perform daily tasks – drastically affecting quality of life.
  • Mouth and Gum Problems – dental researchers once thought bacterial infections caused gum disease, but now it is thought that some of the more severe symptoms of gum disease are attributable to chronic inflammation. The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, part of the National Institutes of Health, report that inflammation can even break down bone and connective tissue that keep the teeth in place.
  • Emotional Health Problems – chronic inflammation may even play a role in your emotions. Scientists at the University of Illinois (Champaign/Urbana) discovered that an enzyme secreted by the immune system caused inflammation-related, depression-like symptoms in mice. Because inflammation is linked with conditions often accompanied by depression – such as diabetes, cancer and heart disease – researchers expect that this study will provide insight into chronic inflammation's role in depression.
  • Cancer Problems – although researchers haven't discovered the exact mechanism of chronic inflammation's role in cancer, they believe it encourages cancer growth. According to the American Cancer Society, inflammation creates just the right conditions for cancer cells to grow and multiply.

Cactus Juice Chronic Inflammation and Pain Relief

Original Article @ David Ogdens Blog

Nopalea Cactus Juice
Natural Pain and Inflammation Relief

We are always on the lookout to improve our lives, be it organising our time, our finances the way we we live. One of the most important things however is to improve our health and wellness. Although it may seem that we must find something like pills or an exercise regimen, or special candles or clothing that will help us to achieve optimal health, we really might just need to take it down to the cell level. With an awareness of things like Betalains and how to get them, we might just end up being healthier and experiencing a better quality of life.

Now you may not have heard about Betalains which are powerful antioxidants that work hard within the cells of your body to help reduce inflammation. Although regular inflammation can be helpful, or even healthful, an extensive or unnatural inflammation can actually do more harm than anything. Having these anti-inflammatory fighters in your system will boost the power that your body has to get rid of harmful toxins, and point you in the right direction to live a healthy and happy life.

Betalains are found in only a few vegetable and desert fruit. They are not generally handed out in boxed cereal or TV dinners. However, it has been shown that these very important antioxidants are actually found in a special plant found in the Sonoran Desert on the west coast of North America. This plant is a "prickly pear" variety called the Nopal Cactus. Inside the juice of the fruit of this plant are found all 24 Betalains known to science today.

The function of these powerful antioxidants is really amazing, and, like mentioned earlier, must be studied at the cell level. Our bodies are constantly battling toxins and harmful bacteria from the environment. When those toxins, or free radicals (unstable molecules) reach the level of our cells, their purpose is usually to damage or destroy whatever they can. Damage from molecules such as these causes disease, again, and inflammation. These antioxidants work quickly to capture these molecules, and diffuse them before any damage is done to the cell. You can imagine how important that might be for you.

The benefits that are derived from the amazing Sonoran Desert Nopal Cactus juice actually make up a list that is longer than you think. Not only does it supply a great source of Betalains, which work to help you find a status of optimal health, but it also works to lower your cholesterol, detoxify your body, and increase your energy. All of these things combine to simply make you a better you.

Scientific research shows that Betalains help to:

  • Reduces the risk of blood clots—Betalains protect the thin lining of your blood vessels; this helps reduce the inflammation that makes your blood sticky and leads to clots.
  • Reduces bad cholesterol — Betalains strongly reduce oxidized LDL cholesterol.
  • Protects cells from toxins — Betalains protect many types of cells, especially brain cells, from toxins known to trigger tumours.
  • Protects your liver — Betalains provide significant protection from toxins that directly affect your liver.
